I've never seen 'oignon vert' before. May be Québecois? 'Un butternut' should probably be accepted as a type-in; it's common usage.

Yeah, I compared translation sites and most said 'oignon vert', or 'ciboule' which is the French equivalent of 'scallion'.

I've added 'ciboule' and 'quebecois' to the list of acceptable answers though, thanks.

:-) By Québecois, I mean it might be Canadian French, not metropolitan French. I've never seen proper spring onions - scallions - in a French supermarket. You see "oignons en botte", which are bunches of small fresh white onions, but they're not quite the same.
