Matthew C. Perry was a USN bully who coerced a sovereign nation into opening its ports to the USA. If his shenanigans had of occured in the mid-twentieth century he may have have found himself before a war crimes tribunal (theoretically, of course). James Clavell was an Australian-born, English-American. Lol. He wrote 'Shogun - A Novel of Japan', (1975). Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton is the villain of the piece in the short story 'Madame Butterfly' by John Luther Long (1898). It is set in Nagasaki. James Clavell was one weird hombre. Suffered shockingly at the hands of the Japanese in Changi during WWII, like thousands of others. Yet he later wrote novels about Japan that portrayed the Japanese as just a Far East contingent of the good, old human race. Bravo. Forgiveness never forgets.
