Characters in this quiz all appear in person; characters simply referenced are not included.
The answers in this quiz are based off books 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of the Lord of the Rings. Characters in the Appendices, the Prologue "Concerning Hobbits" and in other works of Tolkien are not included.

The nine-year old son of one of the Guards of the Citadel in Minas Tirith, this character acted as a guide to Pippin within the city, and served as an errand-runner for those working in the Houses of Healing throughout the Siege of Minas Tirith.

The two sons of Elrond Half-Elven, these characters journeyed with the Grey Company and followed Aragorn through the Paths of the Dead, going on to fight at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

One of the few Hobbits to learn of Frodo's burden, this character helped Frodo perform the move-of-house from Bag End to Crickhollow, as well as leading a resistance to Saruman's rule of the Shire, before being captured by the Ruffians and sent to the Lockholes until the Battle of Bywater.

This character was a Man of Rohan from the Westfold, who served under Erkenbrand. He attempted to hold Helm's Dyke during the Battle of the Hornburg, before falling back and working with Gimli to defend the Deeping Wall, and later, the narrow pathways to the Glittering Caves.

The chieftain of the Woses, this character provided safe passage to the Riders of Rohan through the secret Stonewain Valley of the White Mountains, allowing them to bypass the rearguard of Mordor and arrive at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields in time to break the Siege of Minas Tirith.

This character is known as "the River Daughter" and keeps a house besides the Withywindle, a tributary of the Brandywine River, with her husband.

An Orc-Captain of Minas Morgul, this character was sent to serve in the patrols of the Tower of Cirith Ungol. He was involved in a skirmish over Frodo's mithril shirt, before being killed by his counterpart amongst the Black Uruks.

Once the Lord of the House of the Golden Flower, this Elf was resurrected following his death in the First Age of Sun, and subsequently delivered the prophecy of the Witch-King's death during the wars between Arnor and Angmar in the Third Age of Sun. Shortly before the War of the Ring, he carried Frodo across the Fords of Bruinen and into Rivendell, evading the Ringwraiths and ensuring Lord Elrond could tend to Frodo's wounds in time.

This character was a renowned commander of the forces of Rohan hailing from Grimslade. He fought at both the first and second Battles of the Fords of Isen, and commanded the Right-wing of the Rohirric forces at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

The Lord of the Eagles at the time of the War of the Ring, this character bore Gandalf from the pinnacle of Orthanc whilst seeking information for Radagast the Brown, and later lifted Gandalf's body from the peak of Zirakzigil at carried it to Lothlórien. He was present at the Battle of the Black Gate and helped to rescue Frodo and Sam from the ruins of Mount Doom.

Gwaihir (the Windlord)
This character once bore the warrior of the Rohirrim, Gárulf, to his death, before being gifted as a steed to Aragorn. Whilst frightened by the appearance of a figure likely to be Saruman, he returned to Aragorn along with Shadowfax at the summons of Gandalf, and bore Aragorn thence until his passage into the Paths of the Dead.

The twenty-second Prince of Dol Amroth and eventual father-in-law to Éomer, this character led the Swan Knights and 700 men-at-arms to aid in lifting the Siege of Minas Tirith. He proved loyal to Aragorn and went on to participate in the Great Debate, before riding as a Captain of the West to the Battle of the Black Gate.

The head of a company of Elves encountered by Frodo at the edge of the Shire, this character camped with Frodo at Woody End after frightening a Ringwraith who was pursuing the Hobbit.

Gildor Inglorion
Amongst the Uruk-Hai of Isengard, this character was tasked with guarding Merry and Pippin by his superior officer in the Isengard forces. He was killed by the Rohirrim on the fringe of Fangorn Forest.

Lugdush
One of the Uruk-Hai of Isengard, this character led reinforcements to assist the Uruk-Hai scouts who had captured Merry and Pippin. By the time he arrived, the Rohirrim has already surrounded the scouts.

Mauhúr
A Black Uruk of Cirith Ungol, this character came off the better during a skirmish over Frodo's mithril shirt, though he failed to prevent Samwise Gamgee from rescuing the captive. He is noted for his arrogance and stupidity.

Shagrat
This character was a Hobbit of the Shire who frequently visited Bag End. Bilbo noted his habit of stealing umbrellas and so gifted him one on his eleventy-first birthday.

Adelard Took
A Hobbit of the Shire, this character was the boyfriend of Melilot Brandybuck. The pair embarrassed themselves at Bilbo's birthday party by dancing on the table before his speech had finished.

Most likely a Huorn, this character attacks Merry, Pippin, and Frodo after ensnaring them with a sleeping charm; Frodo is subsequently saved from the Withywindle by Sam, whilst Merry and Pippin are saved from the clutches of this malign spirit by the song of another magical being.

Old Man Willow
This character first encounters Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin in the Old Forest, where he is found singing. He describes himself as "the Eldest." He later saves the Hobbits again in the Barrow-Downs. The One Ring appears to have no effect on this character.
