Territories and Unrecognised States of Africa on a Map
Africa is the continent with the most countries, 54 UN members to be exact. However, there are also a number of territorial anomalies and even a couple of unrecognised countries, as a result of both Africa's extensive colonisation during the 19th and 20th Centuries, as well as the subjective nature in which we define continents. Can you name all 11?
I am only counting territories with a civilian population
The countries in the 'unrecognised countries' column are those who claim said unrecognised nation, although they may have a limited degree of control over the actual territory
I forgot to make note of this, but while the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic claims Laayoune to be their capital, they do not control the city. The controlled terrtiory looks like the third from the left in this photo. The territory is administered from Tifariti in Morocco, as well as from the refugee camps in Tindouf, Algeria.
Great quiz. Is it completely comprehensive? I believe that there is a third (tiny) Spanish exclave on the coast of Morocco and wouldn't the Italian island of Pantellaria be regarded as geographically in Africa rather than Europe?
Thank you! It is meant to be comprehensive (with the exception of territories that lack a civillian population). You are correct, actually there are several Spanish territories in North Africa called Las plazas de soberanía. They are the main reason why I made the rule about civillian population, they are just too obscure. As for Pantellaria, that is a good question. I'm not sure which continent they are considered to lie in, although they are 2 kilometres closer to Tunisia than to Sicily.
