There were many French kings and military commanders who defended their country during the Hundred Years' War. You might make the clue more specific for Joan of Arc.

This quiz assumes the Middle Ages lasted until the early 18th century (Newton) which would certainly have come as a surprise to people living in post-Renaissance Europe.
