South Yemen and North Yemen merged and adopted the North's capital.

The Prussian Empire merged with others to form Germany in 1871, so it doesn't belong on this list.

The Free City Of Danzig and The Saarland existed between the World Wars.

Many others like Tannu Tuva functioned independently and were recognized to varying degrees.

Oh yeah, I forgot. Newfoundland was independent, but suffered a disproportionate number of deaths to its military in the First World War and was annexed to Canada during The Great Depression.

Tanganyika and Zanzibar gained independence in the early 1960. After a couple years, Zanzibar joined Tanganyika and the country was renamed Tanzania.

There were other independent minor areas that were briefly independent of larger nations in Central Asia and the Arab world, but it gets murky.

And the Austrian / Yugoslav / Italian city of Trieste was independent under the oversight of the United Nations for several years after the Second World War, before being permanently added to Italy.

I know things like that get quite complicated as to whether it's truly independent or not.
