The governance of one of these national parks differs slightly but its status is considered to be equal to that of the other nine and it uses "National Park" in its name.

And that's a good point. Just having a look at the list of AONBs and you could see one or two of them potentially being national parks, such as the Cotswolds. Also, just noticed on the Wikipedia page I'm looking at that one AONB was subsumed into the New Forest National Park when it was formed and that when the South Downs National Park was created it replaced two AONBs.
