Lots of conflicts going on around this time, including the Russian Civil War and a bunch of independence wars revolving around it, the Hungarian-Romanian War, the Greater Poland Uprising, etc.

I probably forgot to mention one or two, but it explain the messy borders, haha.

Free Territory? Was that a no-man's land thing or an actual country?

It was an attempt at an anarcho-communist society by the Black Army which actually lasted from 1918 to 1921. I'm using the term anarchist very loosely here, because they did have a military leader for all of its existence.

Possibly add RSFSR as a option for Russia as it became the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in 1917, as they were the de facto rulers of Russia even with a Civil War.

I know I'm probably about to be corrected but didn't Iceland not gain independence until 1944? Other than that great quiz

Thanks. Iceland gained sovereignity on December 1st 1918. Nonetheless, the state remained in personal union (shared a common monarch) with Denmark until 1944.

random fun fact you did not need to know: right after the armistice, on nov. 11 and in mid. november 1918 in general, there were FOUR polish states at once, most joining poland by the start of december, except Tarnobrzeg, which lasted till january 1919. And the main polish state, of course.

russia became communist in 1917 so rsfsr or ussr should be the answer

Uh, no. While Russia did become communist in 1917, the USSR was in fact not a thing until 1922.

No, but RSFSR should definitely be allowed. It was its own state until 1922 when it became a constituent republic of the new USSR.

What is the difference between the Free Territory and Makhnovshchina? Didn't learn how to spell it for nothing.

Not independent yet. Vatican City only became independent through the signing of the Lateran Treaty in 1929.

Lwów did not belong to Western Ukraine, but was in Polish hands. The Ukrainians besieged it, but did not have it.

the poles did not own it till around March of 1919. They began besieging the city around December of 1918 though.

"Free Territory" and "Mountain Republic" are among the strangest country-names I've ever heard of...

Any chance that, somewhere in time, there was a country that was actually named "Banana Republic"?

Nope, but there was also a "Bottleneck Free State" that technically existed as some sort of quasi-state centered around Lorch, Germany around this point in time.
