Essentially it (=culture) is about intellectual property rights over ideas and elements. Ideally, shared fairly and willingly for, to quote John McWhorter from Columbia U. "cross-fertilization". Giving the humanity a chance to prosper.
A massive pile of your everyday items, things around you and things you never even think about, but that are there, are originally culturally unique/based on culturally unique ideas and elements. Later those have become universal (=culturally 'appropriated').
If you wanted the more media-sexy hate-train version, perhaps you can make it yourself?
Out of curiosity... when you see the sushi, do you think of: A) Japan/Japanese culture, B) hipsters, C) just an invention, who cares? ;)
