Countries of Europe in 1444

Can you name the countries of Europe in the year 1444, based on the video game "Europa Universalis 4"?
Tap on the map to zoom in!
While not perfect, this is probably a very decent list. The makers of the game performed research and consulted historians.

I have a hard time knowing what to do with quizzes like this. On one hand, it's an absolute masterpiece of quiz creation. On the other hand, this is really obscure stuff for 99% of the population. But the people have spoken - and now its featured!

Yes, that's understandable. I think my thoughts are that no matter how obscure it may be, there'll always be some group of people who will absolutely love it. And, with this being geography, that group is unlikely to small!

Great work, I'm glad it's featured! It's not hard to get 4 points with just a slightly better glimpse of medieval history of Europe. 5 points - yeah, that's tough. There are so many NBA / NFL quizzes that are 100% obscure to me ;)

This deserved featuring for artwork alone, and I learned some cool history along the way. But is Genoa in the right place? Choosing that answer only lights up land way over in present-day Russia.

I definitely learned a lot from this quiz. I think the 2 biggest surprises for me were that Lithuania was so large and that Genoa apparently controlled territory all the way in Ukraine/Russia.

Yeah, this is an amazing SVG but I think there should be more of a balance between nice but easy SVGs and other quizzes. Right now pretty much all of the quizzes on the nominations page are excellent SVGs but could be completed in about 20 seconds.

Quite frankly, I don't think that the Holy Roman Empire should be considered a nation, even if Paradox considers it to be so. It does make guessing the Germany area easier, but the Holy Roman Empire was just a union of hundreds of tiny German states united under a single emperor- not a country. I don't know, I just feel this way. It's just getting under my skin, especially since I enjoy seeing the border gore that the German states provide.

In the game itself, the Holy Roman Empire is split up. The quiz creator probably did it to make Germany easier.

Also it was kindof a country at that time. The HRE was just an empire where feodalism was still very strong and local nobles had a lot of autonomy. In practice they all acted like independent states and only answered to the emperor in name.

But in 1444 we are just leaving the middle ages and it was how things worked. Even regions in France and England still had a lot of autonomy back then. The royal power would eventually become stronger here and the HRE would eventually dissolve because the emperor's power would become weaker and weaker. But I'm not sure that outcome was set in stone back in 1444.

+1
Level 64
Jan 24, 2020
It was not set in stone at all, Austria or more correctly, the Habsburgs had a firm grip over the empire for a long time. Only after the religious wars and the rise of Prussia they became less powerful.

Maybe have both versions, so people can try it out? Not that I expect to get much. Also, I feel the HRE was a bit like an international body, a bit like a medieval EU for Germany. The Emperor was elected by several states, and they moved armies around for defense, but also attacked each other as independent countries and were constantly competing.

When typing Genoa, the land around Genoa doesn't turn green.

Vatican only became the name of a country in 1929, when the Papal States (or State of the Church) were reduced to the Vatican hill in Rome.

The islands that used to belong to the Knights of Rhodes remain yellow even after guessing all the countries.

Cospaia and Senarica are two other microstates in the Italian peninsula that were independent in 1444.

A couple of questions:

-Why typing Genoa gives you its possessions on the Black Sea, but not the city itself? If you are considering it a part of the HRE, shouldn't dominions be included in the pack?

-Could you accept Moldova for Moldavia? Isn't it it the modern English adaptation?

Moldavia is the English name for the historical principality of Moldova (which is the Romanian name). So they are different names for the same thing - unlike United Kingdom and England, which actually aren't the same (England being a subset of the UK). And a comment on another comment above - in EU4, neither Monaco nor San Marino are listed - https://eu4.paradoxwikis.com/Countries

While I love the quiz as an EU4 player, I think you shouldn't mix EU4 history and real history together (for example by adding san marino and andorra). The EU4 map is a certain view of history, and while based on research, not representative of actual historical borders and events. There is also game design involved, and the fact that the map has changed multiple times via updates is a testament to that. I'm not saying this quiz can't use EU4 as a source, I'm just saying that you should keep it as it is in EU4, because adding your own bits to that creates yet another layer to this cake.

2 stars... because WHY would you have Andorra and San Marino if this is supposedly based off EU4?????????? You should at least say that you use more countries than EU4 does in the description.

Also why would you make the HRE all one thing? That makes no sense. They were far more separate than Scotland and the Isles, or Denmark-Norway-Sweden, yet you make those all separate and lump the HRE together. It just doesn't make much sense.
