Countries of Europe in 1444

Can you name the countries of Europe in the year 1444, based on the video game "Europa Universalis 4"?
Tap on the map to zoom in!
While not perfect, this is probably a very decent list. The makers of the game performed research and consulted historians.

I have a hard time knowing what to do with quizzes like this. On one hand, it's an absolute masterpiece of quiz creation. On the other hand, this is really obscure stuff for 99% of the population. But the people have spoken - and now its featured!

Quite frankly, I don't think that the Holy Roman Empire should be considered a nation, even if Paradox considers it to be so. It does make guessing the Germany area easier, but the Holy Roman Empire was just a union of hundreds of tiny German states united under a single emperor- not a country. I don't know, I just feel this way. It's just getting under my skin, especially since I enjoy seeing the border gore that the German states provide.

Also it was kindof a country at that time. The HRE was just an empire where feodalism was still very strong and local nobles had a lot of autonomy. In practice they all acted like independent states and only answered to the emperor in name. But in 1444 we are just leaving the middle ages and it was how things worked. Even regions in France and England still had a lot of autonomy back then. The royal power would eventually become stronger here and the HRE would eventually dissolve because the emperor's power would become weaker and weaker. But I'm not sure that outcome was set in stone back in 1444.
+1
Level 53
Jan 24, 2020
It was not set in stone at all, Austria or more correctly, the Habsburgs had a firm grip over the empire for a long time. Only after the religious wars and the rise of Prussia they became less powerful.

When typing Genoa, the land around Genoa doesn't turn green. Vatican only became the name of a country in 1929, when the Papal States (or State of the Church) were reduced to the Vatican hill in Rome. The islands that used to belong to the Knights of Rhodes remain yellow even after guessing all the countries. Cospaia and Senarica are two other microstates in the Italian peninsula that were independent in 1444.

A couple of questions:
-Why typing Genoa gives you its possessions on the Black Sea, but not the city itself? If you are considering it a part of the HRE, shouldn't dominions be included in the pack? -Could you accept Moldova for Moldavia? Isn't it it the modern English adaptation?

Moldavia is the English name for the historical principality of Moldova (which is the Romanian name). So they are different names for the same thing - unlike United Kingdom and England, which actually aren't the same (England being a subset of the UK).
