Heh. Most of the map is drastically different, but South America looks just *slightly* off-kilter.

Yeah the only visible differences is that Ecuador owns Loreto (north piece of Peru today.) and Bolivia owns half of modern Paraguay

Feb 12, 2019
That confused me too. I couldn't see tiny countries like Monaco, Andorra and Liechtenstein on the map, even when enlarged but I could see the Bahamas and wasted time racking my brains to think what they might have been called prior to WW1

When I took it the dot for the location of Andorra wouldn't turn green after I entered Andorra. I took it twice to make sure it wasn't a one time error.
+14
Level 65

I had the same problem. In addition, Liechtenstein is missing a dot. I was looking at the map (not the successful answers below). I was missing only 1 country which appeared to be Andorra, but was actually Liechtenstein.
+4
Level 81
Feb 27, 2019
it may be because there is one pixel on the zoomed in version which is red, whereas the other dot countries probably don't even cover one pixel. It would be helpful though to have the liechtenstein dot added.

When I type in 'Andorra' the corresponding black circle doesn't turn green as it does for Monaco and San Marino. Great quiz though!

Also, it might be a good idea to add a black circle for Liechtenstein.

Agreed. I was focussed on the black circle and kept trying to think of a small independent country in Spain that I had missed.

Great quiz, but what happened to Lesotho? Also I would question the independence of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Newfoundland. Yes, they had control of their internal affairs, but when the UK declared war, it included them too. I wouldn't really call that independence.

was the middle of arabian peninsula still not inhabited by anyone at this time
+4
Level 79
Dec 27, 2019
No. The only uninhabited place is in the southeastern corner of the grey area on the map and known as the Empty Quarter still to this day. Most of the unfilled area on the map in 1914 was controlled by the Rashid clan of the oasis and trading city of Ha'il in northern Arabia. Their state is also known as the Emirate of Ha'il, the Rashid (or Rashidi) Emirate, the Rashidi Dynasty, or the Emirate of Jabal Shammar. Their absence from the quiz and map is odd, except insofar as since living in Saudi Arabia I've noticed that Westerners knowledge of the history of this region seems to be something like a black hole.

The Emirate was eventually overrun by King Abdulaziz of the House of Saud, who returned from exile in Kuwait to conquer first Riyadh, and then most of the peninsula, in the 1920s. The Rashid clan is still sore about this.
