For each sport, give the country that won most medals in that sport. WARNING! USA not included, see below. The number of medals won by the country has been given.
Because the United States wins many medals in so many different sports, it has not been counted, same with the Soviet Union (current countries in the territory of the former Soviet Union have been included with their past-1992 medals). Where those countries have more medals than the country asked for, their number is given in the second column
This includes former countries (except the Soviet Union)
In a few cases two countries have the same largest number of medals. In those cases, either country is being considered correct
Medals from Sochi 2014 now included. One substantial change: Canada is not correct any more for figure skating. The others had just the number of medals changed.
The quiz has been changed for the Rio games. Apart from changes in numbers, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are now correct for triathlon; Japan is no longer correct for volleyball. Also the handball answer has been changed, but that is a correction: It seems that previously I used a medal table which only included the men's event.
* cycling: was France, now UK
* shooting: was Sweden, now China
* biathlon: was Germany, now Norway
* bobsleigh: was Switzerland, now Germany
* figure skating: was Russia, now Canada
* snowboarding: was Switzerland, now Canada
* triathlon: was any of Australia, UK and Switzerland, now only UK is correct
Also handball has been changed from South Korea to France, but I don't understand how I could ever have put South Korea there in the first place...
Also karate, rugby sevens, skateboarding and rock climbing have been added.
