The Summer Olympic Games of 1916, 1940 and 1944 were all cancelled because of World Wars I and II. Where were they orginally scheduled to have been held?
The 1940 Olympic Games were forfeited by Japan already in 1938, which was before the World War II. They were moved to be held in Helsinki, but the games were cancelled because of the WWII. I had no idea about Tokyo, only knew about Helsinki. Interesting! :)
Yes, I learned interesting stuff researching this quiz. I had assumed the IOC had moved the games from Tokyo because of WWII, but actually it was the 1937 Sino-Japanese War, followed by the Japan's parliament's own decision in 1938 to forfeit the games, that triggered this. The IOC then awarded the games to Helsinki (the runner-up in the original bidding process for the 1940 games) before the 1939 outbreak of WWII caused the Olympics' indefinite suspension.
