I can't believe that the Vatican isn't on the list. With as many people that visit it and take pictures? Seems odd to me.
+2
Level 58
Jun 8, 2014
Pretty sure the Vatican is in/ is a part of Rome.
+4
Level 40
Jun 8, 2014
Vatican is a country, not a city
+24
Level 37
Jun 9, 2014
The Vatican is both a city and a country. It is a "sovereign city-state"
+5
Level 74
Jun 30, 2014
It's name is Vatican City. It is both city and country.
+7
Level 72
Sep 12, 2016
To be honest, name not withstanding, it is hardly a city by any normal definition. It's really just a part of the city of Rome that happens to be under separate jurisdiction to the rest (and then barely - the Italian government provide many of the services a national government would normally provide).
+4
Level 70

The Vatican is a City, The Vatican is a Country, the question is if the photographs of 'The Vatican' uploaded to Google were so numerous as to warrant a place in this quiz....... obviously not.

Great. Someone started up another argument.

It is both

I think people will take pictures, but not post them. I took a trip around Europe and never posted a Vatican picture. It's not media appealing.

I doubt the stats exist.
+3
Level 62

Most of it is pretty private space where most of the photos are of The Pope rather than of the city state itself, and the rest is museum where one is not encouraged to take photos for the sake of the artwork (possibly less damaging now digital and less flash so the rules may have changed since I went a very long time ago) and for the postcard selling etc.

Monte Carlo is a neighbourhood of Monaco.

Jan 2, 2016
No, it is not. Monte Carlo is part (like a borough) of city-state Monaco.

Level 63

So essentially a neighbourhood.
+1
Level 81

The real question on Monaco is what do people take pictures of? It's pretty nondescript as far as the Mediterranean coast goes except its novelty on paper as an independent nation.

@Tinu, you make out like the Portuguese version of Porto is Oporto which is completely wrong. It's Porto in Portugal and it's only incorrect foreigners who think it's called Oporto.
+1
Level 68
Sep 27, 2018
"Porto is also known as Oporto as a result of linguistic mis-interpretation, as apparently when the Portuguese referred to the city of Porto, they would precede it with an article “O”, and foreign traders therefore assumed the actually name of the city was Oporto."
+1
Level 60

So where did Vatican City rank in the source data? Just curious.
+2
Level 63
Aug 9, 2016
The given source only lists the 25 cities in this quiz. That source refers to another site called sitesmap.com. That one is basically a map of photographs on panoramio.com. It looks like they included Vatican City into Rome. There's only a little marker for St. Peter's Basilica if zooming into the Rome area. The markers of big cities like Rome include Information about their world rank.

No Stockholm, Copenhagen, Munich, Seville, Ibiza; nothing at all in Switzerland - Lucerne, Zurich, Basel, Bern; very surprising. Also the top 6 is 5 coastal cities plus Paris - maybe shots of beaches and Eiffel Tower are where all the cameras are pointed!

as it concerns this quiz i would not consider Rome a coastal city: the historical center is 30km inland, and you can't even see the sea. It DOES have a neighborhood on the sea (Lido di Ostia) but it has not any touristic appeal
+1
Level 75
Jul 4, 2019
No tourist appeal?

It's home to Ostia Antica which is amazing, although I guess not many people who visit Rome have heard of it as it always seems very quiet except for the occasional school trip. Everyone seems to want to go to Pompeii instead, which is less interesting and a much longer & more expensive trip.
+1
Level 67

The only one you mention from the list that i might ve expected was copenhagen (the little mermaid), non of the others. I also expected the town stonehenge belongs to would be on here, besides eiffel tower ad the pyramids it must be one of the most photographed sites (sights?)
+1
Level 62
May 5, 2019
Stonehenge does not belong to any city, town or even village. It is the middle of wide open space (otherwise empty if you don't count the massive road passing it and the tourist centre) It is further away from 'civilisation' than the pyramids are nowadays.

London might not be as beautiful (debatable) as those two but it is certainly more iconic. Most people would recognise Big Ben, Tower Bridge, Tower of London etc but I for one would struggle to name a single photoworthy building/structure in Florence or Prague.
