🏏ALL ABOUT CRICKET🏏

Introduction

What is cricket? Cricket is a sport that is played all around the world, mainly in former British colonies such as Australia, India, and South Africa. Cricket involves two teams of eleven players taking it in turns to bat and field, similar to baseball. The sport is believed to originate from the south of England around the 13th century but it was in 1975 that the first Cricket World Cup was held.

The Laws of Cricket

Whilst it may sound complicated, cricket is a simple game to play. As mentioned above, two teams of eleven players take it in turns to score points, or runs, and the other team bowls and fields trying to get batsmen out.

How do you get people out?

There are four main ways to get people out and many other technical ones which can be found here.

Firstly, there is the possibility of being caught out. This is what happens when someone bowls and the batsmen hits it into someone's hands without the ball bouncing. If this happens the person who hit it is out and is replaced, this is always the case for getting out.

Secondly, there is being run out. This occurs when the batsmen are running between the stumps, but the ball is given to the bowler before one of them is in their crease.

Thirdly, there is lbw, more commonly known as leg before wicket, which is when the ball hits the batsman's leg before the wicket or stumps.

Finally, there is being bowled out. This is when the bowler hits the stumps with their bowl.

How are points scored?

Points are called runs and they can be scored by running when the ball is hit before the fielders get it back to the bowler. If it goes to the boundary line hitting the floor on the way, it scores 4 points, if it does not hit the floor before going to the boundary line, it is six extra points.

Reach & Introduction by the British

As explained in the introduction, cricket is played mostly by the former English colonies (we´ll learn more here), like Nigeria, West Indies, India, Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe. By continent, it is mostly played in Asia and Oceania, but of course, the United States has plenty of leagues and variations to offer.

Why is it mostly played in the English colonies?

As you may have known, the British had a huge empire spanning across 7 continents, and when they conquered, they brought the game with them, and the locals started playing too (this example most common in India). This map below shows the performance of National Cricket teams, and if you look at a map of the British empire, they are very similar in the countries shown. Today, cricket leagues are found all over the world, and is the 2nd most populous sport in the world, with over 2.5 BILLION FANS.
