Finding South Park

+3
First of all: South Park is not a real town.

Let's assess what we know:

• It's located in Park County, Colorado, we know that, because it is constantly spoken about and because of the frequent appearance of the flag of Colorado. You can see Park County here:

• Park County is also the location of the high basin South Park, i.e. a small grassland region with zero inhabitants. You can see this place here: Google Maps

So an option is that the town South Park is located exactly where the actual high basin is. Let's check if that would work.

My first attempt at finding the exact location of South Park was by making a screenshot of the moment where the picture zooms out of South Park and the whole U.S. are seen. This happens in the episode "The Damned". Once I had the picture, I assumed the makers would have zoomed out in such a way, that the center of the screen would be the place they had started zooming out from, South Park. Then I constructed two straight lines connecting the edges of the screen and looked where they crossed. I layed Stewart's U.S. county map over the image and adjusted it to the projection of the image. Turns out the lines cross in Ouray County, which is here:

So that was a dead end.

In the episode "Volcano" the people of South Park dug a trench, which led the lava from the erupted volcano to Denver. So assuming that South Park is located where the real South Park is and since the Volcano would have destroyed South Park had there not been the trench, we have to assume, that it was very near to South Park. The only "volcano" in Park county is Thirtynine Mile Mountain, which is located on the site of significant volcanism 35 million years ago. It is unrealistic to say, that if it were a volcano, its lava would reach South Park high basin. Therefore, I'll have to assume, that the makers of South Park just turned any mountain into a volcano. The most sensible choice would be East Buffalo Peak, at whose foot South Park lies. Therefore, the people of South Park would have dug a trench somewhere between the peak and the town, thereby leading the lava through South Fork Salt Creek River into Middle Fork South Platte River, which is a tributary of the South Platte River, which flows through Denver. Therefore, in my opinion South Park is most likely located in the South Park high basin.

My guess is around here: 38°58'11.4"N 106°04'09.1"W

Update: 11 minutes into the episode "The Scoots" I just saw a map of South Park and it's surroundings. It is located adjacent to and north of Fairplay, southwest of Como and south of Breckenridge. This is round about the location of the former mining town South Park City, which evolved during the Gold Rush. Therefore, the volcano is most probably Mount Silverheels.

Therefore, my new guess is this area just north of Fairplay: 39°14'56.9"N 105°59'50.6"W

If you have other ideas as to where South Park might be, please write it in the comments.

Interesting - is South Park actually a real thing? Like, did the creators of South Park decide to hide it somewhere so that only a few people could find it?

Nope, the high basin South Park is definitely much older than the series.

And I didn't really find a place of which I can say with 100% certainty that it is the place the makers of the series based South Park on.

Btw, you said you overlayed the map with Stewart's US counties map. However, the map on the counties quiz has a different projection, do you think it's the same as the one in the show?

South Park is an American animated sitcom created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone and developed by Brian Graden for Comedy Central. The series revolves around four boys—Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick—and their exploits in and around the titular Colorado town. The show became infamous for its profanity and dark, surreal humor that satirizes a wide range of topics towards a mature audience.
