Why JetPunk?

A few weeks ago I was thinking about one particular way JetPunk has impacted my life. This made me think about JetPunk in general and its influence in my life. It made me wonder about all the time I've spent taking quizzes, making quizzes, writing blogs, etc. Was it all worth it or did I just waste a small part of my life away?
My short answer is: it's mostly been worth it. In this blog, I will go through the primary positive (and negative) impacts that JetPunk has had on my life.
Pro: Cultural Knowledge
This is the impact which first got me thinking about JetPunk's influence on my life. Over half of my classmates are international students, and often times there are cultural differences among us. Furthermore it can be difficult to make connections at first with other classmates, and more unfortunate is how difficult it can be for new international students to adjust to being a graduate student in a foreign country.
This is why I've really grown to appreciate the things that I've learned thanks to JetPunk. For instance, when I meet new students, I am able to talk with them a little bit about their culture or at the very least, hold a conversation about their country. For instance, typically I ask them where they're from, and after they name their country, I ask where specifically. Then, thinking I'm confused, they try to explain where their country is, and so I have to clarify by asking what city/state/province/etc. Or perhaps I'll just ask if they're from X city. I'm usually hesitant to be that presumptuous, so I usually make a guess that statistically makes sense (for instance asking if a Ugandan is from Kampala), but I've found it really makes them light up. It's sad that most people they've talked to don't even know where their country is, so it brings them joy to know there are people out there that do know about their country.
The JetPunk knowledge that I have gained has helped me immensely to not just be able to hold conversations about foreigners' culture, but also has opened me to want to learn more about other cultures. I obviously don't know about every culture and country, but JetPunk has given me a desire to keep learning more!
Pro: Language
Before making an effort to think of why JetPunk hasn't been a waste of my time, this was usually my automatic response. As an undergraduate student, I majored in Spanish, though my current studies in graduate school have no relation to Spanish. And since I live in the Midwest, I don't exactly have much of an opportunity to continue growing my Spanish skills. Involving myself in the Spanish section of JetPunk has helped my skills in vocabulary, grammar, and Hispanic culture tremendously. Between taking quizzes in Spanish, making quizzes in Spanish, writing blogs in Spanish, and (more recently) reading blogs in Spanish, I've found that my skills are more honed now than they were as a Spanish student.
JetPunk has also motivated me to learn more about other languages. Unfortunately, I don't think I would even classify myself as proficient in any other languages, but I've been motivated to learn Portuguese and Italian, though my progress there is severely lacking at the moment.
Con: Procrastination
I'm guessing this is somewhere that almost all of my readers have been. You have a big exam or homework assignment to due, but maybe it isn't too pressing of a matter just yet. Plus, you really don't want to get started on it right away, so instead you find something else to do for the time being. More times than I'd like to admit, that was turning to JetPunk. If you aren't a student, you could probably replace homework/exam with chore and this would check out.
Of course, JetPunk isn't the only thing which has caused me to procrastinate, and if JetPunk didn't even exist, I would still find myself procrastinating by talking to my friends, playing an online card game, or literally any other excuse that I could make up. So, this isn't necessarily JetPunk's fault, just that it has facilitated in bad habits in the past.
Pro: Inkscape
This pro is probably only really applicable to me due to personal circumstances, but for others it could be generalized to a greater technological/coding awareness.
As many other invested quizmakers here on JetPunk, I have developed a familiarity with Inkscape, a vector graphics software. As a mathematician, I use LaTeX for my research. Unfortunately, often times there is no simple way to incorporate a detailed graph or figure into a LaTeX file without simply importing a file (.png, .svg, etc.) with the figure. It reached a point where some topological spaces or other graphs that I was trying to illustrate were not easy to draw in tikz-cd (a LaTeX package which can be used to draw images). I ended up asking my advisor about it and was surprised when he said that he uses a software called Inkscape to make figures for his research papers. Thanks, JetPunk.
Pro: Community
Lastly, we have the thing which I've seen most commonly cited as one of the best parts of JetPunk. Whether you're seek it out or not, community just seems to find you here. It could start as the same people commenting on your quizzes, for example. You can add other users as "friends" or join a group with others. Possibly the best example of JetPunk community is Discord. Personally, I'm not a big Discord fan, but simply being on the JetPunk Discord server, you can see how this website has brought together people from across the world.
In my personal experience, I've come to know dozens of individuals because of JetPunk. Many have helped me practice a new language (Portuguese with MG!), inspire me to blog more (baptistegorce), or motivate me to be more creative in quizmaking.
As you can see, in my mind, there are many more reasons to be active and involved in JetPunk. It has helped me become a more well-rounded person in gaining important general knowledge and motivation to continue learning. I hope that you, dear reader, see the impact of JetPunk as generally positive for you as well! I'd be very curious to hear what other ideas you have about how JetPunk has formed you (or been a detriment).
Me when the Chinese person speaks Mandarin and not Old Wenzhounese with a Manchurian accent:I started doing quizzes on the other site that shall remain nameless (Sp****e) but got increasingly frustrated by their format. I just googled "Sites like Sp****e" and, lo and behold, here I am.
I make and take quizzes and write blogs to keep my brain active. At 60 years of age I am still learning things everyday, thanks to JetPunk.
And yes, JetPunk’s format is superior
I can relate to this a lot. The community may be a con, and a pro simultaneously. It was a con for a long time for me, but I thought it was a huge pro. There sure are more coms but that was good to read :)
What cons did you have in mind?
Here are some thoughts from your list though. I think for me, I learnt various stuff about cultures from YouTube videos and different places like that, but JetPunk definitely played a role in helping me keep the information. Obviously through quizzes, but it was just generally a place I could come back to for educational, or particularly geography related things, even though there were times when I was pretty disconnected with the topic, though it's always been my favorite. As for language, this is definitely a big thing for me as well, and maybe the biggest one right now. I started with taking some quizzes in Spanish and French, but now there are quiz, blog, and chart communities in so many languages, and I have finally helped start one for my language, which I always wanted to do.
And I can definitely tell you’ve been into the languages side of things lately; that’s great!
Punchline: JetPunk is great!
Although I have been not as active as I used to be back in the pandemic era, I still lurk here every now and then and take a few quizzes and read some blogs. I will never forget this site! :)
