0. Introduction and General Remarks
Welcome to my 'My Most and Least Liked Flag' blog. I hope you will enjoy it.
I'd like to give a few remarks first. First, this is a completely subjective
blog! It just represents my opinions. Please do not feel offended if
your country or subdivision will appear as the 'least liked flag'.
I'm going to analyze the best and worst flags from each continent, as well as the best and worst subdivision flags from 12 selected countries, giving them a rating from 1 to 5 (5 being the best, 1 being the worst).
Now, I'm going to have biases, obviously. I very much prefer simple flags over detailed ones. I love flags that feature the color orange, and admire flags that follow a certain heraldic rule - you'll know which one I talk about after reading this blog.
That's it, let's look at some flags and have some fun!
1. Continents
1.1 Europe
United Kingdom
Europe is a continent flooded with very simplistic flags. While not they're terrible, they're not outstanding either. Great Britain, however, is different. It's a catchy and well-known flag. Simple but unique - and most importantly not boring. It follows heraldic rules and is very aesthetic for the eye. Would be perfect if the red diagonals were aligned centrist. Big plus points for its representation of Scotland and (Northern) Ireland. Also asserts English dominance in a completely fine manner. Would get an even better rating if Wales was visible on the flag.
Gassu rating: 4.65Belarus
As you'll notice in the ratings, it's not a terrible flag. I very much like the waving pattern, this very uniquely represents Belarusian culture. But that's really the only positive aspect of the flag. I dislike the red-and-dark-green pattern on the right. The proportions seem off and the dark green lets the flag appear in a very somber and dirty manner. Also, red should not have the right to border green directly.
Gassu rating: 3.101.2 North America
Jamaica
The race for the top country flag was a very close one between Canada, Panama, and Jamaica. In the end, I decided for Jamaica because of its unique color pattern. It's the only country to not feature either white, red, or blue in its flag. The colors match each other very pleasantly. Dark yellow fits perfectly for this flag. Also, I'm always having a weakness for crosses.
Gassu rating: 4.60Bonaire
The ABC islands all have top tier flags, but Bonaire has hands down the best. The yellow-white-dark blue pattern is not very common, but an amazing sight - I love it! Again, the unproportional diagonal stripe looks magnificent, and the little symbol fulfils the flag.
Gassu rating: 4.75Belize
First of all, I don't like the blue-red pattern; it's not very aesthetic for a flag. Secondly, the red stripes seem too thin to my eye. Lastly, I'm not a fan of seals in flags, they're too detailed. Also the blue is way too dark.
Gassu rating: 1.90Turks and Caicos Islands
I don't even know where to begin with this flag. I dislike flags with the Union Jack in their canton. In fact, the only Union Jack flag which looks good is the UK's. Secondly, what is this coat of arms supposed to represent? Three randomly chosen, indecipherable objects not connected to each other? Sorry Turks and Caicos, you're definitely a candidate for the worst flag ever.
Gassu rating: 1.051.3 South America
Suriname
As opposed to Belarus, Suriname knows that red and green does not go well together. By adding little white stripes, they made the flag very awesome! There is nothing to complain about the proportions. Simple but efficient.
Gassu rating: 4.55Colombia
Colombia on the other hand, is too simplistic. The yellow-blue-red patterns is not unique, especially not in this region of the world. But the reason why I gave Colombia the lowest marks in all of South America - although still high compared to other flags - is the proportion. Yes, the 2-1-1 proportion is unique, but I'm personally not a fan of it; I'd prefer a 1-1-1. But don't let that fool you, it's still a cool flag, as represented in the rating.
Gassu rating: 3.451.4 Africa
Namibia
Oh Africa, you have such wonderful and colourful flags. The decision to pick my favourite African was not easy, and in the end I had to decide between the unique Seychellois flag and the Namibian one. In the end, I chose Namibia, by a hair's breadth. The Namibian flag follows heraldic rules and does not let red border blue or green, but rather keeps space using white. You might start to see a pattern in my judgement here. They did everything right with their color arrangement. As explained before, I have a foible for diagonal flags. The yellow sun in the dark blue - magnificent!
Gassu rating: 4.70Zambia
I'm gonna state it once again: green should NOT border red, under ANY circumstances! There's too much green in this flag, and it is very right-side-biased. Not my type.
Gassu rating: 2.451.5 Asia
Bhutan
What a badass flag! The only flag to feature a dragon! (Sorry, Wales doesn't count). The first thing where my orange bias comes to light. Yellow and orange is a very pleasing combo, and the detailed white dragon completes the flag perfectly!
Gassu rating: 4.85Malaysia
Okay, so first of all this looks like a copy of the American flag (I know it isn't), but has weird proportions. The canton takes up too much space. But probably the worst thing about this thing is the fact that the lowest stripe is white, which makes the flag appear even more stretched, especially without a black frame. Note: I still consider the flag of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to be the official one. The Taliban flag would receive an even lower rating.
Gassu rating: 2.051.6 Oceania
Papua New Guinea
Again a cool flag which features an exotic animal. Black and red goes very well together, and the yellow bird tops it. The Southern Cross nicely represents the country's location. In all, it's an amazing symbolism.
Gassu rating: 4.65Marquesas Islands
Wow! What a flag! I love the combo of dark yellow, red, and white. I'm most impressed by the black tiki head. I love Polynesian culture, and this flag probably best represents Polynesia. Simple, but unique - definitely a top flag in my books.
Gassu rating: 4.95Samoa
You know the story by now. Red and blue does not go well together. This heraldic rule is being broken regularly. The flag is actually quite boring, a red flag with a blue canton. If it wasn't for the (amazing) Southern Cross, Samoa would've been given a way lower rating.
Gassu rating: 1.90Wallis and Futuna
What is that flag even supposed to represent? Putting the colonizing nation in your canton is not cool - independent of the colonizer. Also the flag is too red-ish and the symbol is meaningless to me. A white x, what is that supposed to mean? Wallis and Futuna, please change your flag. The only upside is the white line that separates the French flag from the rest. Edit: If you look at their Wikipedia site, you'll notice that every single flag W&F ever had was plain boring.
Gassu rating: 1.152. How Would I Rank Flags of These Famous Countries?
Ah, the star-spangled banner, who doesn't know it? I have to admit, I love the shades of colors. But the thing that lets the U.S. flag outstand is its symbolism. The stripes represent the original colonies, and the stars the 50 states. A great example of nice symbolism. Simple in colors but effective in conveying a message.
Canada
Canada probably has the most recognizable flag in the entire world. A simple maple leaf is enough to symbolise an entire country. Simplicity and stereotype level 100.
Gassu rating: 4.55
Mexico
Gassu rating: 3.80
Brazil
We have looked at 20 flags now, but Brazil is only the third to not
feature the color red in its flag. Very pleasant arrangement of colors.
There is a lot of symbolism, especially in the 27 stars, representing
the 27 subdivisions. The banner 'ORDEM E PROGRESSO', is representing the
Equator. The lone star above the Equator is supposed to represent Pará,
however there are three more subdivisions with territory north of the
Equator - a little bit inconsistent.
Gassu rating: 4.25
Germany
Germany's flag will representatively stand for all famous countries
with tribands - such as Italy, France, or Russia. As I mentioned in the
very beginning, tribands are simplistic - not bad but not outstanding
either.
Gassu rating: 3.60
Spain
The Kingdom of Spain has one of the few flags where the seal makes the flag better. If it was only a red-yellow-red scheme, it would receive an ever lower rating than Germany, because of its weird proportion. But the coat of arms is very symbolic and unique, even if it's too detailed for my opinion.
I very much like the fact that the coat of arms is not centered.
Gassu rating: 4.15
South Africa
Another amazing flag from the Black Continent! So many colors, but still very pleasant for the eye. What I like most about the flag are the yellow and white lines that serve as separators for the darker colors. As a person that does not like red, green, and blue bordering each other - I approve!
Gassu rating: 4.65
India
As mentioned before, I like flags featuring the color orange. The
Indian triband itself is not too special, the flag is only unique with
the unmistakeable Ashoka Chakra wheel. For my gusto, the wheel is too detailed, and the spokes are very hard to decipher. Maybe only 12 instead of 24?
Gassu rating: 4.05
China
A lot of red, that's for sure. The communist ideology is very present
in the flag of the People's Republic of China. The stars can
represented either different Chinese people, or Mao's four social
classes. The symbolism is not quite clear. Personally speaking, I like
(politically) neutral flags more.
Gassu rating: 3.40
Japan
The Japanese have successfully mastered minimalism. Who could've
thought that a simple red dot is distinctive to an Asian regional power?
I like the flag's uniqueness and simplicity.
Gassu rating: 3.80
Switzerland
The Swiss Cross - my flag! One of only two square flags, the other being Vatican City. The cross is very symbolic and representative for Switzerland. A simple but effective flag.
Gassu rating: 3.80
New Zealand (current)
As much as I love New Zealand, I'm absolutely no fan of their flag. I dislike flags featuring the Union Jack - colonization is a thing of the past in the globalized 21st century. I like the Southern Cross, but that's really the only positive thing about it. New Zealand has so many great flags such as the tino rangatiratanga or the Lazer Kiwi Flag, both of them better than the current one - by galaxies! I'm in utter shock that New Zealanders voted to keep that flag.
Gassu rating: 2.20
New Zealand (proposed)
WOW! Dear Kiwis, why on Earth did you vote against making this beauty official? The silver fern flag is such an icon, it fits so much better than plain ol' boring Union Jack. Fern + southern cross = chef's kiss. The fern nicely serves as a divider between blue and black. Please, take my seal of approval.
Gassu rating: 4.85
3. What's Next?
That's it for today. We looked at 29 flags, and I hope you had as much fun as I did. Please, feel free to respectfully disagree with me if you have a completely different opinion about a flag.
In the next blog (Gassu's Fun With Flags #2), we're gonna look at my most and least liked subdivision flags from 12 different countries. To finish that blog, I will reveal my five most favourite flags in the entire world - stay tuned!
Also thank you for putting the Union Jack that high in Europe :)
Also New Zealand, please adopt the proposed flag!
The ones I disagree with are
PNG (I don’t like it much)
Samoa (I think it’s pretty)
Bhutan (Yellow Orange, not a good mix in my opinion, though the dragon is cool)
Namibia (don’t like the color scheme much)
Bonaire (it just looks bad)
Marquesas Islands (it isn’t horrible, just I would rate it somewhat lower, because as I said in my opinion yellow and orange don’t go well together)
I would probably also change the least and most, because in my opinion, flags such as Zimbabwe, are worse than Zambia in my opinion.
I've wanted to make something about flags for a while.
1. I also love orange!
2. UK is an okay flag, but it's too complicated and dull for me. The symbolism is quite good
representation for Wales!!3. I think Red on Green is a great combination if you get the shades right, but I also don't like how Belarus did it.
4. Jamaica and Bonaire are amazing, Belize and UK-canton flags are horrible, I agree.
5. I love Suriname, but I think Colombia is decent, my least favorite would be Paraguay, it is so boring that they had to make 2 sides, both of which are boring.
Those are my main opinions! I might also do some sort of flags opinion thing. This looks like a great series, it will definitely light up the Blogs section!
Zambia did it perfectly... perfectly bad. Or I’m feeling that maybe because of the Orange with black mixed with... argh, that’s a complete mess.
They should just take that Orange-Black-Red tricolor, make it the main part of the flag, put white lines to avoid clash, and have an eagle on a green circle.
I love Gassu’s blogs! Sad they are rare… RUB is shining again!
Well, where would you rank the flags of Nepal, Iran, Israel, eSwatini and Seychelles? These happen to be some of my favourite flags.
Iran: 3.50
Israel: 4.35
eSwatini: 2.50
Seychelles: 4.65
1. Sri Lanka
2. Nepal
3. Papua NG
4. Vanuatu
5. Tanzania
6. Kazakhstan
7. Bhutan
8. Mauritius
9. Eritrea
10. Jamaica
As a Brit I totally agree that Wales should be represented on the flag somehow, and I also agree about the canton issue with former colonies, get new flags guys to show your independance!
New Zealand ...Wake Up! you need the fern flag, it looks so much better.
My personal favourite is Kenya's flag, simple but representative.
