By the logic of accepting Egypt in this quiz which you have to go through the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea to get to from the Indian Ocean then China should be number one on this list instead of Australia.

Those are all seas of the indian ocean, while china has no border to any sea, that's part of it.

The Red Sea is not that more removed from the Indian Ocean as the South China Sea is from the Indian Ocean Though. To me it makes no sense to add those but then not allow others, it should just be countries in direct contact with the Indian Ocean and not countries where you have to have to go through 2 Seas and a Gulf to get to!

The point here is that those two seas and that gulf are just parts of the Indian Ocean. So although you do have to pass through them to get to Egypt, you are in the Indian Ocean the whole time. By your argument, I could say that The US does not border Mexico, because you have to pass through either CA, AZ, NM, or TX to get there. But that doesn't make sense, because those states are all part of the US, just as the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, and the Red Sea are all part of the Indian Ocean.

Common sense would dictate that the South China Sea is much more a part of the Pacific than the Indian. Egypt and Sudan feel a bit of a stretch, but the Arabian Sea is clearly part of the Indian Ocean (no barriers whatsoever) and pretty much the same re: Gulf of Aden.

Indonesia and the Malay peninsula effectively wall off anything east or north of the Indian Ocean.

That's not common sense at all. These distinctions are all arbitrary. It's weird saying that Egypt borders the Indian Ocean because the Red Sea is popularly conceptualized as a separate body of water. You can make an argument for including it, but it's no more wrong or right than arguing for China.

Yes, kalbahamut, all distinctions are arbitrary to an extent. But I think the quiz is justified in how it assigns whether or not a sea is part of the Indian Ocean. The Red Sea is not an enclosed body of water; therefore it must belong to some ocean. The ocean it belongs to is obviously the Indian Ocean. The South China Sea, however, could be seen as belonging to the Indian Ocean or the Pacific Ocean. But I would say it belongs more to the Pacific Ocean. So, there is more of an argument for including the Red Sea than the South China Sea because, using the principle that every open body of water must belong to an ocean, it is obvious that the Red Sea should be included, while this is not the case for the South China Sea.

For what its worth, the CIA World Factbook classifies the Indian Ocean as this.

In its description it also states that it "includes Andaman Sea, Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, Flores Sea, Great Australian Bight, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman, Java Sea, Mozambique Channel, Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Savu Sea, Strait of Malacca, Timor Sea, and other tributary water bodies".

I'm sorry, I've never complained about a featured quiz before, but this is a bad quiz. Why include the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf, but not the Arabian Sea... which you have to go through to get to the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea. This makes no sense to me.

The Arabian Sea is included. Why are you complaining? The Arabian Sea is already included by saying that the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea are considered part of the Indian Ocean. It's common sense.

Yemen, Oman, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Bangladesh, Madagascar, Seychelles, Comoros and Mauritius (you know, countries that are IN THE INDIAN OCEAN!!!), Mozambique, South Africa, Kenya, Somalia, Eritrea and Djibouti — because, apparently bordering the Red Sea is the same as bordering the Indian Ocean, so Israel and Jordan also should be included, And by extension, the rule should therefore apply to the Persian Gulf, which would include Iraq and Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and UAE. Did you even bother to look at a map when you made this quiz?

well, it's hardly a part of the Atlantic and it's not a lake so it must belong to some body of water.

Seems odd to me that this quiz is about the surface area of the country and not about the length of its coastline.
