Apr 23, 2012
I'm tempted to agree with you, seeing as Russia does span the entirety of Northern Asia and only encompasses around 40% of Europe; however, I believe the reason it's included as a European country and not an Asian country is because most of the inhabitants of Russia live within Europe. Most of Russia's land in Asia is Siberia and uninhabitable. I think for simplicities sake, it's kept as a European nation for quiz purposes.

I completely agree. Cyprus is an EU member so clear both Cyprus and the EU consider it to be part of Europe. As for Russia, well, on a map it looks more in Asia, but I understand the arguments for Europe too. Just goes to show how arbitrarily we (humans) like to divide things up. Same for Asia vs Oceania.

Russia, Cyprus, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia and Kazakhstan are all in both Europe and Asia, known as Euasia. But Kazakhstan is the one who are only seen as Asia, even a part of Kazakhstan is on the other side of the Ural mountains which is the border of Asia and Europe.

97% of Turkeys area is in Asia and 88% of the population live on the Asian side of Turkey. Turkey is Asian country. 77% of the population of Russia live in the European part of Russia. Although European part of Russia is only 25% of the total area of Russia that part also makes up 38% of the whole land area of Europe. So Russia is more European.

Cyprus is NOT in Europe. It is not really on a continent. It's an island. But geographically it is Asian. Russia is on both continents. Membership in the EU or NATO are political things. Many of you seem to forget that continents are about physical geography, not political.

I think the debate about Cyprus and Russia being in Asia or Europe is a sterile one; there are always going to be people in favor and against both options, and both have valid arguments. I've accepted that it's never constant between quizzes either. So whenever I come across an Asia or Europe quiz, I always try both countries in them, just in case. It's not that extra 10 seconds that will stop me from having time to complete the quiz.

+1

Nov 13, 2015
It's not true that 90% of Russia is in Asia; the real figure is about 77%. But the European part includes about 77% (that's a weird coincidence) of the population, and the capital, so it makes sense to count it as primarily European.

Taiwan, rightly, is just as much of a country as any other. The reason the UN doesn't officially recognise it is because China is one of the five countries that hold permanent 'veto' status on the UN's member board, and since Taiwan also claims to be China, relations between them are...tense.

Anyone who complains about the inclusion, or not, of countries such as Cyprus & Russia, please note they are consistently treated this way on all JetPunk quizzes. My personal inclination is Russia, by rights, really ought to be considered an Asian country even if its major urban political centers are primarily European, since the vast majority of its landmass is in Asia. It's a bit of an amphibian. What JetPunk *really* needs is a "Name the countries of Eurasia" quiz!

both votes represent politics and not reality. In the first case, countries that do not recognize the Republic of China's very real sovereignty over the island of Taiwan are only expressing their desire to do business with the People's Republic of China and its massive economy. In the latter case, countries that recognize Palestine's non-existent sovereignty are only making the political statement that they are against what they wrongly perceive as colonialism, or that they hate Jews and/or believe Islam to be the one true faith, or that they are not fond of the United States, or that they are sympathetic toward the Palestinian people's suffering. Nobody who knows what they're talking about actually believes that the PNA rules over a sovereign territory.

Nov 13, 2015
There's no way to make this quiz that would satisfy everyone. But our position is that being a country requires sovereign control of territory, and that international recognition is of lesser importance. The UN could vote that 2+2=5 but it wouldn't make it so.

fromaj: those are three possibilities but if you read what I wrote I also said they could be misled, or have accepted a false narrative, or be believing Muslims, or have a bone to pick with the United States, or be sympathetic toward the suffering of the Palestinians. You could hate the USA and not be anti-Semitic. You could be sympathetic toward the Palestinians and not be stupid. You could be a Muslim who believes that the land is yours by divine providence and still know some things. There are a range of reasons why different countries and people wish to recognize Palestine as a country but none of those reasons are that the PNA actually exerts full sovereign control over a functioning and contiguous nation state.

Just a few things I would like to say: What was called Asia during the Antiquity is in fact the western part of Anatolia (i.e. Asian Turkey). It is rather strange that is has been extended to the entire continent, as far as Japan. It is also laughable that some now think that Middle East is NOT in Asia... As for Cyprus, then, since it is due south and close to Turkey, it is indeed in Asia. The case of Russia is a bit different. I have always considered Siberia as a colony, Russia can still be considered as an Empire. Just think about the British Empire during the 19th century... the UK was indeed a European country, though it had colonies on every continent. The only difference is that Russia is contiguous, and that they kept Siberia because, well, it's not very populated, not very attractive, nobody seriously tried to conquer it, and there were never any serious separatists.

Why do people say this all the time? Cyprus is an island in the Mediterranean. How can it be geographically in Asia? Why are these people always so sure of themselves? Is Rhodes geographically in Asia? It's closer to Turkey than Cyprus is. Why isn't Malta geographically in Africa? I don't have a strong opinion on the subject just find it funny how people can be so confident about something that's not even clear.
