I was expecting Bhutan to be on the list but it turns out that the data wasn't counted for that country.

Same! I was also pretty sure about Costa Rica - which just missed out on two levels, ranked 16th overall and being barely above 5 million inhabitants.

Otherwise it'd appear in the last group, ahead of Bahrain.

Very interesting quiz!

This is because the World Happiness Report is BS. They only take into consideration material factors education, lifespan, income etc...This is why Scandinavian countries appear at the top, but I have lived in Sweden, and visited every Scandinavian country, and people are not happy. They may be contempt and have few things to complain about, but they are also extremely lonely, depressed, quite miserable if you ask me. When you survey happiness based on subjective self-reported happiness, it is countries like Paraguay, Costa Rica, Mexico and Bhutan that come at the top.

Good quiz, but way too much time. I got several by just shotgunning countries

Thx, HappiestWhale! Considering to shorten the time a bit.. If you wanted to check some of my other quizzes, too, it would be great to hear your comments of their timing.

You need to distinguish the categories better: i.e 100 m+,25-100 m and 5-25 m otherwise technically countries could end up in multiple categories.

If they are so happy, why so many antidepressants and suicides?

This sounds as capitalistic propaganda to me.

The data is outdated. For instance, Ireland's population has risen above 5 million so doesn't fit its category.

Great quiz. I always find the subject of happiness an confusing one. How to measure it is quite difficult. Stated happiness? Lack of suicides? general well being? Very difficult to say.

The World Happiness Report 2021, which is cited as the source for this quiz, goes into some detail when explaining how they come up with a metric for this.

The (very) short version, they talk to 1,000 people in each country, and ask them to rank their quality of life on a scale from 1 to 10. This is supplemented by also asking each of these people whether they experienced a lot of positive or negative emotions over the previous day.

More details (much longer than I can fit here) can be found in the "Technical Box 1: Measuring Subjective Well-Being" (grey background) on this page.

I've recently found out that despite ranking very highly in happiness index, Iceland probably has the highest rate of antidepressant use in the world.
