I'm surprised there's no question about the alternate name, Tsingtao. It's there sort of indirectly in the beer question, but it doesn't help to link the 2.
Good point. As for my reason, I think Tsingtao is just an alternate form of the city's name, which is not that important in a quiz that serves as an understanding towards the city itself. Rather, I chose to have a question on the Chinese translation as it is more important for the history of this city.
The name "Qingdao" was settled in the late nineteenth century, when the governor of the area discovered two small islands off the coast covered in green flora. The governor reported this to the imperial court, stating that these islands can become a strong military base to defend the area against invaders. Gradually, the term "Qingdao" spread from the small islands to the area on the mainland, hence the city today.
I can remember a little bit about the city, but only managed 6 / 20. It of course played a major part in Germany's minor imperial ambitions to match England and France.
