The President of the Swiss Confederation is an annually rotating office among the seven members of the executive, the so-called Federal Council and is elected by the parliament. The President chairs the meetings of the Federal Council and represents the country in external affairs and does not have more authority than the other Federal Councillors. The first Swiss President took office in 1848 when the modern Swiss Confederation was founded.
