Were 'England' a sovereign, standalone nation, you would be correct. In that case, Scotland would also work. They're both part of the United Kingdom, though :p

Technically, England and Scotland, along with Wales and Northern Ireland, are states of the United Kingdom. Therefore, they are not sovereign nations

You do realise it has to SOVEREIGN nations therefore England doesn't count as it is part of the UK which is a SOVEREIGN nation.

exactly my thought, UK MUST be in this quiz as it ends with -land

If we are talking about full, official names, the UK would qualify, but lots of others wouldnt, e.g Switzerland's full name is the Swiss Confederacy (which doesn't end in land, as you can see), but no one says Swiss Confederacy, we say Switzerland. Similarily the common name of the UK is the UK, or the United Kingdom, not "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". Almost every country has a longer full official name than its common one, but for some reason these controvercies always arise only with the UK, I wonder why.

Somaliland is sovereign, as that word is generally understood. The government in Mogadishu has no influence on it, or if one prefers, it has much less influence than the EU has on Greece. That sovereignty just isn't recognized as such by other states.

Legally, they ARE countries. Not what the quiz asks for though, which is sovereign states. The United Kingdom is a Unitary State consisting of two countries, a principality and a province.

@fizzure : and no one care because that's just the way they deal with it IN the uk. Outside it's just relevant about sport teams. Otherwise we should accept Newfoundland, Maryland or Greenland.

For the purposes of this quiz, yes. The instructions are given at the top of the quiz, they're clear and straight-forward - why does everyone have to question something so basic and simplistic on this website so much? Just do the quiz and enjoy it. Or not. There's no need to get so indignant about it.
