There is a common misconception that England is not a country. It is in point of fact a country within a royal union. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is composed of 4 countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

England is a country but not a sovereign state in it's own right.Same with Scotland and Northern Ireland.

It's only a country within a very narrow and entirely local interpretation of that word, which nobody else uses. The same way that US States are states, but not sovereign states, and you don't see Americans bitching about how Maryland should have been on this list. A country, for international purposes, is the same as a nation, or a state - it's a sovereign state. As for the Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish on here, get used to the fact that you're colonies, or vote for your independence. You can't have it both ways.

That being said, the UK should work, because its full name is United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

We shouldn't be included on this quiz, or any 'country name' quiz that doesn't specifically specify it, but "colony" is definitely the wrong word.

After many readings I've only now got rossco's comment. Of course, the United Kingdom itself does end in "-land" in its full title, and therefore should be counted!

The quiz asks for "common English name". The common English name is 'United Kingdom'. The same way 'China' relates to 'People's Republic of China'.

Technically, England and Scotland, along with Wales and Northern Ireland, are states of the United Kingdom. Therefore, they are not sovereign nations

If we are talking about full, official names, the UK would qualify, but lots of others wouldnt, e.g Switzerland's full name is the Swiss Confederacy (which doesn't end in land, as you can see), but no one says Swiss Confederacy, we say Switzerland. Similarily the common name of the UK is the UK, or the United Kingdom, not "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". Almost every country has a longer full official name than its common one, but for some reason these controvercies always arise only with the UK, I wonder why.
