Good question, and I understand why you asked. It is because Alaska's Aleutian islands go over the divide between the western and eastern hemispheres (180 degrees east). This means that the islands on the other side are very much farther east than Maine, the farthest east contiguous state.

I don't understand how most of these are misconceptions. Probably 80% are just common knowledge.
