It's weird to think about this, but Connecticut and Massachusetts (included Maine at the time) were likely the most urbanized regions of the country at the time. Connecticut being the 6th most populous state and the Massachusetts being the 2nd.
Virginia was most the most populous state with a population between 450k - 540k, but didn't really have any major urban centres for a while besides Norfolk and Richmond. I removed Norfolk since the city was burned by the British on January 1st 1776 and wouldn't recover for a long time.
Population in the Colonial Period and Continental Periods - For several of the larger cities.
Estimates by Carl Bridenbaugh (direct download) - For a handful of smaller cities.
A century of population growth in the United States - For a census data of cities around the early 1770s.
The Population of Eighteenth-Century Philadelphia (direct download) - For Southwark and Northern Liberties. Estimate for Philadelphia discarded.
Official 1790 Census - For population estimates for cities in Massachusetts (and Maine) in 1790.
The geometric mean for respective cities between both censuses is used for the population figures in this quiz.
I wonder why Connecticut had so many?
