I think it would be only reasonable to warn people that you have excluded Turkey.

Turkey isn't in the original quiz, so why should he warn people?

Turkey is not necessarily a European country, as the vast majority of its land lies in Europe. Turkey also is more culturally similar to Asia, rather than Europe.

But the tile says "countries of Europe", so it should be included

The vast majority of Russia is in Asia as well. The reality is this is a physical geography quiz - which is about where things are located. Turkey is in Europe (obviously not all of it). But politically, the government center of Russia is Moscow - in Europe, and for Turkey it is in Ankara. But on the other hand - most of you would have said Istanbul, which is also both in Europe and Asia. I think Turkey should be included on both maps, as should Russia.

Then France should be included on the South America quiz. Would that also be acceptable? I'm not saying that it is or isn't, but you should consider that people would probably get pretty mad.

This is such hypocracy! Why then is Egypt always counted by Jetpunk as part of the middle east when it is geographically in Africa?
+1
level 56
Nov 17, 2017
@divantilya - the Middle East is not a continent that is easily definable, it is a region that has a number of different definitions. However, Egypt is always considered to be part of the Middle East in any academic or serious publication on the subject.

Wow. This is the highest average I've ever seen on a Jetpunk quiz (43/45 at the date of this comment). Seriously, I know this site has some real geography nerds, and I'm one of them (I got all), yet I'm still rather shocked, and quite fascinated really, that the lowest answer was guessed by 90% of takers! I assume these percentages will go down with time as this quiz is on the front page now.

We can debate whether Turkey should be included or not (and Russia and Cyprus for that matter), both sides of the argument have merits, but JetPunk takes a particular line and is consistent in its approach, and perhaps we should just accept that (because no matter what approach they take, they could be criticised).

Cyprus is in Europe according to the E.U.'s official site. http://europa.eu/european-union/about-eu/countries/member-countries/cyprus_en it has 6 members in the EU why do you nematodes put it in Asia?, it is a European country period.

Opinions don't matter. Facts are facts. Turkey is in both Europe and Asia and should be included in this quiz.
+1
level 55
Oct 30, 2018
Actually opinions do matter. The exact borders of Europe, Asia and Africa have no basis in objective fact and are effectively social or cultural constructs. The concept of "Asia" is especially one that has zero connection to reality except for where people like to draw lines. And here Turkey is considered an Asian country, even though some of it is considered to be in Europe.
