technically, hitler and the nazis invaded germany first by taking power their, and japan did that too, so it had total control of japan. i think that makes sense. also, the regime of japan probably invaded territory in japan that was occupied by seperate japanese islands
I got Japan with less than a minute to go. I didn't consider them until I knew I was looking for a country that was alphabetically between Indonesia and Kiribati.
The Japanese military did kind of take over power, yes. Even if they hadn't though, the Japanese Empire would have been occupying the area of the modern country of Japan.
I would like to inform you that including "Japan" as an answer for a quiz that prompts you to name countries that were a part of the Japanese Empire seems unfair. I hope the creator of this quiz reconsiders their choice of including this answer.
That's clever, but look at the description. "Name the modern-day countries who possess territory that was occupied by Japanese troops during WWII." Japanese troops never occupied Japan during WWII. They were already in Japan before the war started. The came from Japan! Japan doesn't make sense as an answer in this quiz.
Japan was technically still occupied by Japan during WWII. The fact that they didn't start being occupied by Japan during WWII doesn't matter. I don't see any reason why Japan shouldn't be an answer in this quiz.
Briefly and disastrously in 1944, Japan occupied more than just the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India but this never seems to be mentioned on any quiz. Imphal and Kohima anyone?
But unlike Andaman, the Japanese suffered a crushing defeat at Imphal and Kohima. It was their biggest defeat at that point with over 54000 casualities.
Finding the last country drove me almost crazy,... until i typed Japan just to relax my impatient fingers.
I would argue that the Japanese army was NOT an OCCUPYING troop in Japan. Hence the clue and the wording seems a bit misleading to me.
Had Nihon (Japan) changed it's name, and that modern day Japan had a different name than 1940's imperial Japan, then having Japan as an answer would have been more defensible.
Aside from this, great and fun quizz. Thank you / Arigatou gozaimasu
This quiz made me break out the google. I had always thought French islands like New Caledonia were under Japanese control during WWII. Thought wrong, though. I feel a little smarter now. Thanks, Quizmaster.
Significant portions of the territory they occupied were parts of extra Asian empires at the time... you have British India, the American Philippines, and French Indochina to name a few. Though now this territory is not part of the modern-day countries of any European nation.
What's the source used for this quiz? Did you just eyeball a map or is there an actual webpage? I want to know, because I want to use the same source for my quiz.
What about opening India up for a discussion? They did took some tiny territory around the city of Imphal in 1943. They only held it for about 2 months, so it's entirely jutifiable to not include on the quiz, but it would make a nice tricky question.
How come you put India by itself, and not in brackets for U.K. You do realize that during WW2, India was known as "British India", because it was still a British colony until after the war.
Kiribati has a total land area of 811 sq km (313 sq mi). The islands extend about 3,900 km (about 2,400 mi) from east to west. From north to south they extend about 2,100 km (about 1,300 mi), straddling the equator.
Good Quiz! I got all but one, Japan. Didn't really think of it because I thought, "can a country be said to occupy itself". For me when a country is occupied it is by a foreign power not itself. Oh well.
The fact that Japan is on the bottom half of most guessed answers (76% as of 2020/01/30) clearly means that the description is, at least, not clear enough.
It was Japanese Empire. It was the Emperor who headed the military.
The Emperor did in fact rule over 100% of the modern day Japan.

Very good quiz, Micronesia almost got me there.
'Occupation' always denotes a foreign power taking over a country, as happened when the war finished and the allies occupied Japan and Germany.
