Countries with Two Borders

The following 27 countries each border exactly two other countries. We give you the other countries - so what is the country?
Land borders only; we exclude joint maritime boundaries.

In that sense it's Guyana that borders France, because Suriname is *in* France.

Suriname is an independent country. You are thinking of French Guiana.

LarryLovage: No it isn't *in* France . Suriname is an independent country which borders Guyana and Brazil. If France, (i. e. French Guiana) is included, which it seldom is, then Suriname borders three countries.

Reguarding this quiz: Netherlands borders France at Sint Maarten, but maybe you don't want to consider overseas territory borders? Reguarding country distances quiz: I went to daftlogic.com, thanks again for the link! However I couldn't find a 'table' or something with minimum distances between countries. Is it something you worked out yourself working out distances one by one or am I missing something? Thanks in advance! Regards, Giovanni

Yes, we're not considering overseas territory borders, and anyway in this case Sint Maarten is a constituent country - not a territory - of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which is why it appears in the Countries 197 to 204 quiz. There will be debate forever, I am sure, about whether countries like this are actually countries, which is why there is no universally agreed number of nations in the world - for instance Wikipedia says anywhere from 190 to 206, citypopulation.de says 242, and this website's Countries of the World quiz names 196. Re your other question, the link is definitely there, on its front page. Cheers, Jeremy

Giving the borders makes this quiz way too easy. I think it would be better without those. Otherwise nice quiz.

Why not Morocco?
+1
level 71
Sep 4, 2014
Because it borders Algeria, Mauritania, as well as Spain (at Ceuta and Melilla). It also borders Western Sahara, which Morocco occupies 75% of - but not the remaining 25% which remains undisputably independent, which makes it one of the world's countries that appears in some country lists but not others. For this quiz we don't need to resolve that question because we have three bordering countries anyway!
+1
level 59
Sep 4, 2014
Thanks. The question of Western Sahara is moot because its border would exclude Mauritania, so either way... I didn't realize there was a city in Morocco on the Strait that belongs to Spain. I notice in Google Earth the border with Ceuta is portrayed as in dispute?
+1
level 71
Sep 4, 2014
I'm not sure why googlemaps says that. I crossed that border last year, and it's just a regular customs station that announces you're now in the EU/Spain (and tells me the motorway speed limit even though Ceuta doesn't have one!) plus well fortified fences for its full land border length. It certainly feels culturally Spanish when you're in Ceuta (and you're in a different time zone and you spend euros), which is quite surreal if you're otherwise spending your time visiting Morocco.

Way not enough time, especially if you're on a mobile device. The way it's set up now, it's merely a speed typing test for those with maps memorized, rather than a challenge for someone with average geographical knowledge to work out the answer from the given clues.

If Canada and Denmark should agree to split the disputed Hans Island between Greenland and Ellesmere Island among themselves, that would bump the number of answers in this quiz to 29, as then Canada would border the USA and Denmark, while Denmark would border Canada and Germany! Hi, very nice quiz, and I have something that may be interesting to point out, I don't know what is Jetpunk's stance on this kind of situation but Argentina and Uruguay actually don't share a LAND BORDER as the Uruguay river serves as the border between them.
+1
level 71
Apr 18, 2018
Actually, it does, at Martín García Island! But to take your general point, borders across rivers and lakes are considered "land" borders, and borders across seas (even if connected by causeways like the one constructed between Singapore and Malaysia) are considered "sea" borders. You could argue it either way, I guess, but I suspect the definitions we use are derived from what looks apparent on a map.
