A chart showcasing the classification of cyclones that formed or crossed into the North Indian Ocean basin since 1990.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) is responsible to monitor this region.
Besides India, the IMD issues advisory regarding tropical storms for Bangladesh, Iran, the Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen as well.
It includes the portion of the Indian Ocean north of the equator, the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and other marginal seas.

• Climate change has been responsible for the large number of cyclones in 2018 and 2019. It has also caused rapid intensification of cyclones, which means that the cyclone becomes stronger in a short amount of time.
• The 1999 Odisha Cyclone, a super cyclonic storm, was the largest, strongest and most intense cyclone of the basin, hitting the state of Odisha.
• The costliest cyclone was the Amphan Cyclone of 2020 (shown in thumbnail), another super cyclonic storm, which hit the state of West Bengal and caused damage of over $13.7 billion in West Bengal, Odisha and Bangladesh.
• Over the 33 year period since 1990, these cyclones have caused damages worth more than $120 billion to the countries in this basin.
For example, if a cyclone has wind speeds in the range of 63 to 88 kmph for an average period of 3 minutes, it will be classified as a "cyclonic storm". This is the scale used by the IMD.
