⚔️DUTCH EMPIRE⚔️

I'm Back! Welcome to another blog. The Dutch don't get enough attention for their empire, so let me present you with this blog about the Dutch Empire and their colonies.

Introduction

Dutch empire map

The Dutch empire wasn't like any other powerhouse colonial empire. They had their own unqiue style of seafaring, colonizing, and conquering. Yes...they didn´t have the most powerful army in the world, and they were known for selling of and losing some colonies, but the ones they DID have, they left a cool mark of influence, whether it was language, art, or other things. Lets learn more.

Foundation

The Dutch empire gradually grew, thanks to their seafaring and exploring skills. Abel Tasman, William Barents, and Willem Janszoon. As their navy began expanding, they soon conquered regions Like Australia and even parts of Brazil! Eventually, they reached the Dutch Golden age. More below/

Dutch Colonies

The Dutch had various colonies across 6 continents. Let's look at the most important ones.

Australia For a short period, in the 1700s, they controlled half of Australia, mostly on the Western side, thanks to their great explorers. Remember Abel Tasman? Yes, that's where Tasmania comes from.

Suriname Look at the picture on the right, yes, that is the colony of Suriname! Today, Suriname speaks Dutch, the only South American country to do so. They had this ONE colony till the late 1900s.

New York From 1624-1664, the Dutch West India company ruled the Eastern New York area, founding cities like Albany, and yes, NYC! But there was lots of selling and buying involved. The Dutch bought the area from the natives, and the British peacefully bought the area.

Indonesia This is an interesting one. The Dutch REALLY wanted this region. This was their biggest area of colonization, and they became rich from all the materials here. But in 1949, the Indonesians had enough of the Dutch and got independent.

Dutch Golden Age to Downfall

The Dutch were FIRING by now! They had one of the best navies and explorers, as well as...how could we forget? The Arts at home. Let's talk more about the arts. The Dutch Masters were during this time, like Rembrandt and Vermeer, who painted amazing pieces of art like the Milkmaid (Vermeer) and the Night Watch (Rembrandt). Note that trade was also thriving in the area, as their colonies grew, they had a wider variety of foods and goods. This is also the age where the dutch began getting smarter and understanding the nature of life-also known as the enlightenment. The Dutch East & West India companies were thriving and creating monopolies with countries like Japan. Who even knew? They were big on shipyards and sugar. Through all this science, mathematics, art, and culture, it looked like nothing could go wrong...but then the 20th century came. Throughout Europe, countries were losing their colonies because of war and other reasons, so did the Netherlands. Today, they only have some island colonies across the world.

Basically talking, Brazil attracted many Europeans, including Dutch. They invaded many times the Northeast of Brazil. The main objective, was be next to one of the biggest productions of sugar and sugar cane. They were in Brazil between 1630, and 1654. Also, the invasion of northeastern Brazil by the Dutch resulted directly from diplomatic relations between Portugal, Spain and the Netherlands at the end of the 16th century. Until 1580, the Netherlands had a direct involvement with the sugar business produced in Brazil, as they were the ones who financed the development of the business here and they also participated in the refining and marketing of sugar in Europe.

The sugar activity yielded a lot of profit for Portugal and the Netherlands. However, this situation underwent profound changes with the crisis of the Avis dynasty in Portugal, at the end of the 16th century. This succession crisis broke out when d. Henrique, King of Portugal, died and left no direct heirs.

Therefore, a dispute broke out and resulted in the coronation of Philip II of Spain as king of Portugal. As a result, the crowns of Spain and Portugal were unified under the same king. This became known as the Iberian Union and meant, of course, that drastic changes would take place in diplomatic relations between Netherlands and Portugal, as Netherlands had been at war with Spain since 1568.

This war between Spain and Holland was related to the struggle of the Dutch for independence (until 1581, Holland was under the rule of the Habsburgs, the dynasty that reigned in Spain). Because of this context, the enemies of Spain became the enemies of Portugal, as the two countries came to be ruled by the same king.

Thus, the Dutch ended up being excluded from the sugar business and this resulted in an action by the Dutch against Portugal. In 1595, the Dutch sacked Portuguese ports on the African continent and, in 1604, attacked the city of Salvador, Bahia, but the Dutch attack failed. After that, the Dutch remained in truce with the Spanish until 1621.
