Arsenic trioxide was sometimes known as "inheritance powder" because of its common use as a poison. Rates of poisoning decreased after the invention of the Marsh Test in 1836 which made it possible to detect arsenic in human remains.
People die all of the time and it was far more common to die young, with no readily apparent cause, in the early C19 than we are used to now. I find it hard to believe that there would have been so many murders by poisoning that it made a noticeable difference in death statistics after the introduction of the test.
I wasn't being completely serious anyway, just pointing out what seems to be a logical flaw. I'm sure there are valid reasons why they believe this which I haven't considered.
They live in traditionally german areas, by which I mean places german immigrants moved to. From Pennsylvania to Iowa, all along the rust belt. Plenty of farmland for them, and good quality fruits and vegetables for us.
If Hofstadter's law applies, then the excess time needed would have to tend to a specific value, because otherwise people would never get anything finished, and in fact they do. Therefore, the excess time needed after referring to Hofstadter's law over and over again in a struggle to find out when one will finish will be smaller every time you refer to it. Thus, if you have two similar tasks, and you estimate when you will be finished with it, but also when you will be finished with reference to Hofstadter's law, and then actually do the task and time yourself doing it, then you have three values from which you can calculate for every task, when you will finish it, even with reference to infinite iterations of applying Hofstadter's law. Thus, you will be able to say when you finish the second task.
But the problem with that is, that we would have to apply Hofstadter's law once again, which we cannot do, for infinity plus one doesn't work. Thus I have proven that given the condition that people actually finish stuff at some point, Hofstadter's law cannot work.
Update on the Amish population: it is now over 367,000 (about 50 thousand extra people in 7 years) this means that the prediction may not be as far-fetched as it may seem.
