Istanbul should still appear, because its second airport, Sabiha Gökçen International Airport, is on the Asian side and handled 29.6 million passengers in 2016. Its airport on the European side, Istanbul Atatürk Airport, handled 60.1 million passengers in 2016.

Glad you accept Denpasar, but it's a bit strange why Bali is accepted/listed as an answer seeing as though that's the name of the island.

Shocked that you list Bali as an answer.

Note: Only one of Istanbul's airports is listed. The main airport (Atatürk) is located in Europe.

I don't understand how Tehran, Dhaka, and Karachi don't make the list. They're huge cities.

Yes, huge cities without much air traffic. Kolkata and Dhaka also have more than 10 million people in their metro areas, but very few of them use air travel as a regular travel option.

Iran as a whole is pretty isolated from the outside world, and how many people do you know who have been to Kolkata/Dhaka for a holiday? Neither are the most popular tourist destinations.

Tehran has plenty of air traffic, but it's split between two airports. The two combined have 25M passengers a year, more than enough to be on the list.

As I was taking this, I kept putting in Okinawa, expecting it to be on the list. Now I know why... Naha....

Well I must say Changsha and Hanoi are both somewhat of a surprise to me, as well as a few that didn't make the list. Not because they would be small, but Changsha is quite isolated, Hanoi isn't even a paved car-city and Vietnamese people do not (get to) travel much. How can these have more than Teheran, Karachi, Kolkata, Dhaka, Ankara, Manama, Kyoto or Nagoya..?

When was the last time you were in Vietnam? I was there in 2008 and again in 2014 and the difference was staggering.

Well Iran is politically and economically isolated, which would drive down numbers. Pakistan and Bangladesh are very poor countries (considerably poorer in per capita terms than China or even Vietnam) and would consequently have low numbers of travellers amongst their populace. Kyoto is served by (Osaka) Kansai Airport, which is on the list. Ankara, Manama and Nagoya are somewhat surprising, though I imagine with the first and third of those Istanbul and Tokyo (and Osaka) dominate arrivals into the country. I s'pose Manama is in a competitive area for major hubs and is in the shadow of Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi.
