How are the UAE not on here? Doesn't seem like a forest super-power to me . . .

I was wondering that too until I checked their percentage of forest cover and in disbelief the images Google presented. I was surprised.

UAE is 3.87% forested according to the FAO. Mostly mangroves.

I suppose 2 trees in a courtyard in The Vatican counts for something.

...also the fact that it isn't in Asia?

Pretty sure the Vatican is technically in Asia since they do not compete on EuroVision.

I think they should compete in it.

Not surprised so few got Pakistan. Surely there's plenty of forest up towards the Himalayas?

Yes there are forests in the north. Lots. But compared to the area of the country, they are less. The mostly deserted provinces of Balochistan and Sindh bring the percentage of forested area really low. But tree plantation campaigns have been launched and I hope that my country will be greener than its flag one day.

Yemen might not have a lot of trees, but they've got some of the most wonderful ones - the Dragon Blood Trees on the island of Socotra. Impossible to travel there now due to the war in Yemen, but I'd love to see them one day.

Actually Socotra is doing just fine under UAE humanitarian intervention/occupation, though I imagine the connecting flights might be a sticking point.

Yep, fortunately the war hasn't reached Socotra, but getting there is the problem. Last time I checked anyway it was simply impossible to book a ticket.

Qatar - 0. People who want to plant trees, I think you have a pretty good place to start.

If a place has zero trees (or zero percent tree coverage), it is probably not very hospitable to trees. People who want to plant trees are likely to have more luck if they start in a place where trees recently were, like Brazil.

Except that in Brazil they'll just cut them down again.

I started a lovely little garden in my garage in Riyadh but after about two weeks everything had died except for the mint in one corner and the little tree I had planted in the other. The tree lasted another 2 months, the mint 6... until ants moved in and ate all the roots.
