A fine quiz, 20/20. "Most difficult" quizzes are subjective as I knew every answer without thinking deeply. The real challenge of this quiz is the spelling - MAN, you're unforgiving! :) Took me the last full minute to spell Yamoussoukro correct. My personal pain points for capital cities: Majuro, Malabo, Moroni.
I can spell those correctly, but i always get those ones mixed up as to which countries they belong to, along with Maseru, Monrovia, and Maputo. All are African capitals (other than Majuro) that start with M and have a moderate amount of letters.
I remember Liberia was settled by freed (liberated) American slaves. They named their capital after American President James Monroe. And their flag bears a strong resemblance to the US's.
I have so much trouble with eastern Europe... I can never remember all the capitals, and the ones I do remember I assign them to the wrong countries. I always mix up the middle four "stans" as well, and I miss much of Africa.
Oddly enough the capital I usually have the most trouble spelling wasn't on here - Naypyidaw. Nice to have a quiz that won't let you fall into the habit of incorrect spellings.
It's not like that. Nobody anywhere refers to New York simply as "New," but lots of people (perhaps almost everyone?) from Burkina Faso and the neighbouring countries calls Ouagadougou "Ouaga" when speaking informally.
If people from Burkina Faso and neighbouring countries are doing this quiz they will then find Ouagadougou easy to spell without having to go for short cuts.
Iceland isn't too difficult. I personally get the other Scandinavian country's capitals mixed up. Excellent quiz, however my OCD would like you to fix Chad's capital. It's N'Djamena not NDjamena
Both N'Djamena & Ndjamena will work, I've given the correct spelling as N'Djamena but as in Jetpunks world capitals quiz both work. (don't want to get too pedantic)
Personally I don't think Mogadishu is that hard because of you watch the news you will never forget it again. Maybe add in Albania or Maldives? Or if you're going for the long and confusing names go with something else.
As jetpunk world capitals quiz accepts Kotte & Bandar as capital names I feel happier not using them in the difficult capitals quiz. I thought this quiz would help jetpunkers get used to the trickier capital names as an end to doing the world capitals quiz.
I feel at very least if the UN considers it the capital, Melekeok should really be an acceptable answer for Palau. I ran out of time trying to work out how to spell Ngerulmud, once I eventually recalled it, but had Melekeok straight away.
Well, the easiest ones for me were Tonga and Tuvalu, I grew up knowing those here in Oceania. Those African ones are so hard!! (except Mogadishu of course).
funny you demand perfect spelling i would have 18 but you had one more a or U in uuuuuuulaaaaanbaaaaatuuuur , managed 14 but only 36 percent did worse ? more accurate stats would be how all the geniuses on the board who achieved a perfect score on their 7th try and then bragged about it
Only 7 African countries out of 54 available, 3 Pacific Islands from 11 island countries, not too bad a ratio I think. Many people find the given Capitals fairly difficult to remember when it comes to quiz time and I made this quiz to be a help in cementing these fairly difficult names into the memory. Obviously you are well acquainted with the African Capitals and find them easy, not all of us are that lucky.
Ngerulmud replaced Koror, Palau's largest city, as capital in 2006. The settlement is located in the state of Melekeok on Babeldaob, the country's largest island, located 20 kilometres (12 miles) northeast of Koror and 2 km (1 mile) northwest of Melekeok village.
Hi Ferrets10, people on jetpunk doing this quiz are mostly Geography buffs and are used to doing the World Capital City quizzes. This is a good site for those people to polish some of the difficult capital names with an end to doing other quizzes more successfully. We are mostly using jetpunk to learn and if it takes more than one shot it is a means to an end.
Am I the only one who finds it funny that more people get Antananarivo than Mogadishu? That seems backwards to me... However, other people's brains work differently than mine...
Haha I'd have to say the most difficult quizzes for me are those african capitals of lesser known countries, like Maseru, Maputo, Kigali, Lusaka, Conakry, Porto Novo, Nouakchott, Lilongwe, Lome, I always forget which country has these.
For me sometimes it is the easiest of Capitals that, when asked all of a sudden, my brain opens a trapdoor and the answer drops out. Then I can remember all the tricky ones and not the easy one.......
Just found this through a comments section. Great quiz. One of my nemesis capitals, Honiara, wasn’t on there so that’s a good thing I guess. Ngerulmud was though unfortunately.
Wow Mal, the spelling though! Never got Reykjavik. My first try was Reykjavic, then Reykjavick, then Reykjavyic, and all the variations possible except the K at the end. Shame.
Some noobs google the capital of Myanmar (I did this the first time I took the World Capitals Quiz) and they find the capital is Nay Pyi Taw. I think the type-ins should be stricter than automatic type-ins (say like not accepting Kirgyskejfjrisjnfjwismejqowstan for Kyrgyzstan) but should have some flexibility (like accepting Kirgistan for Kyrgyzstan).
Some countries have difficulty with the translation of their capital city names into 'What we may call English'....... for example..
"Beijing" is the atonal pinyin romanisation of the Mandarin pronunciation of the Chinese characters 北京, the actual spelling in English has settled on 'Beijing'. Some nations have not as yet settled on an English spelling so a little leeway is given..... as in Mongolia and Myanmar. .. as used in Jetpunk Capitals of the World quiz.
When you think about it that is not too bad. Go outside wherever you live and ask 100 people "What is the capital city of Palau?"....... and see if 51% can come up with Ngerulmud!
Some I don't find difficult. Examples: Honduras, Suriname, Madagascar, Montenegro, Burundi, Somalia, Chad, Icelandm, Malawi, Kazakhstan, Mongolia. These I even know the capital, but I have difficulty writing its name correctly in English: Burkina Faso and Slovenia.
I feel at very least if the UN considers it the capital, Melekeok should really be an acceptable answer for Palau. I ran out of time trying to work out how to spell Ngerulmud, once I eventually recalled it, but had Melekeok straight away.
I can't stop this feeling....
Great Quiz nonetheless!
