There is no way countries such as the US or India should be on here...especially when other countries like Ethiopia and Sudan are missing where genital mutilation is common!
India doesn't have amazing women's rights but still the media over reports incidents that are not really common at all...but in countries such as Somalia 98% of women have had their genitals mutilated.
The practice you're talking about has been almost extinct since 200 years. It's ridiculous to use it as an argument for India being the worst country for women.
The link you provide, as good as it is, is about inequality. This quiz is about danger. Slightly different topics, don't you think?
However, as mentioned in the source (if you checked it), hollywood-metoo-campaign played a part in the case of US rising surprisingly high. Therefore it's quite safe to say the women's awakening to danger all around them is somewhat distorted. Either way, the American women felt very unsafe this year.
In the case of India, you should know that women easily fall victims of violence, abuse and so. Especially the poor ones, but from all 'casts'. Home isn't exactly a safe haven either. You can check the information from any human rights, women's rights and other NGO sources and they all tell the same story. What makes Indian case worse is that they don't even have a civil war or non-existent government / full blown anarchy like in e.g. Somalia.
1 in 5 American women have been raped, according to the article. However, in South Africa, it's estimated that 1 in 3 women will be raped in their lifetime. Most rapes go unreported.
The source isn't a good one at all. It is based on subjective opinion of some 550 unnamed "experts". The list seems to formed on basis of stereotypes or prejudice, which is quite apparent as USA , which is way way safer than hundreds of countries appears on here. India, though being relatively unsafe than many countries, is no way the most dangerous countries for women.
The source is the best one available at the moment. It's based on the interviews of regular people by and as seen by people working in the fields of "human rights, women’s empowerment, and the rule of law ... we fight modern-day slavery worldwide and we play a leading role in the global fight against human trafficking." If you wish to complain to the "unnamed experts", check out Thomson Reuters Foundation and their offices in Mumbai, Delhi or Chennai, for example.
While I completely agree with you that we would be more than happy to get a better source, I will have to say that don't let your national pride blind you from what's going on. All sources of all kinds tell many negative stories of living in India as a woman. They cannot all be lying, right?
Here are the first two stories, on the subject, I found with a simple online search:
"Around 70% of women in India are victims of violence including; Rape, marital rapes, sexual assault and harassment, cultural and traditional practices, and human trafficking including forced labor, sex slavery and domestic servitude."
"A crime against a woman is committed every three minutes. A woman is raped every 29 minutes, a case of cruelty committed by either the husband or relative of the victim occurs every nine minutes. Around 100 million women and girls are estimated to be victim of human trafficking..."
Sounds pretty bad and it went on like this.
I have no personal say on what's the worst country for a woman. I can say that most of Europe is top notch.
Therefore India definitely deserves the place

That's tragic. That's all that can be said here.
