Great idea for a quiz, thank you

As a Cardiff City fan I hate to give Bristol

city credit but they’ve been in the top division of English football

Thanks a lot mate! Yeah the top division they have, but the question referred to the Premier League.

The estuary of the River Severn flows several miles to the west of Bristol and doesn't pass through the city boundary at any point. Bristol actually sits on the River Avon (and the smaller Frome). Looking at the answers they are all officially English cities apart from Shrewsbury (which is a town), and Bangor, which is in Wales. Good quiz though!

Has a population of below 150,000 but does not have a cathedral

Shouldn't that say "and" not "but?" What is remarkable about smaller cities not having cathedrals?

+9

Mar 31, 2020
Presumably, it would be rare for a smaller settlement to be named a city unless it had a cathedral.
+2
Level 72
Apr 3, 2020
Yep this is right. The only reason Truro, Ripon and Wells are cities (despite their tiny populations) is because they've got cathedrals.

Nice quiz!

Could you also have 'Bath' for cities under 150,000 population without a cathedral (it has an abbey)? And also Bath for 'a city since time immemorial'? It's got the Roman Baths at least :)

+2
Level ∞
Mar 31, 2020
@LCstfc01 can you weigh in on the Cathedral question? The Abbey has been the seat of a bishop in the past, which is why I think it was excluded.

According to Wikipedia, Bath has only been an official city since 1090, but obviously the settlement goes back to Roman times.

Apparently CoE is quite strict with the usage of cathedral, like Catholics. Cathedral is only a seat of a diocese, so Bath Abbey (actually parish church) is only a former i.e. not current cathedral.

I suggest you add 'Anglican' to the question and reinstate Lancaster as an answer. It's literally true that Lancaster has a cathedral but pragmatically misleading for an English person, and it wouldn't normally appear in a list of English cathedral cities.

There is not english city called "London"! And I doubt that the "City of London" is one of the most dangerous cities to live and that the Commonwealth Games have been hosted by/in the "City of London". Both is rather true for the habitated "suburbs" of the cities of London and Westminster.
+3
Level 74

That is absolutely incorrect. London is a city, the City of London and Westminster are cities within London.

It's like saying "The UK is not a country, because England, Wales etc. are countries".

The City and County of Bristol are one and the same thing with the same boundary, so even though the main city centre is well away from the Bristol Channel, technically it does have a coastline.

Carlisle! That was killing me. My buddy and I took the train last year from London to Glasgow. Something went wrong and they had us all depart for a few hours in Carlisle. Couldn't remember the name for the life of me, but we had a fun jaunt around town there.

"Has a population greater than 150,000 but has never

had a football club compete in the Premier League" accepts Canterbury as an answer, but Canterbury's population falls far short of the mark, being around 55,000 in the 2011 census. It hasn't grown threefold in the last decade!

Might do with an update to add Southend-on-Sea (coastline, post-99)... or wait until all the new Platinum Jubilee cities become official and add them all, some are definitely valid for certain categories :).
