There's at least one Hamilton in almost every English speaking country so if Canada was already taken its a logical progression to just name the other English speaking countries.
The original Hamilton is under 100,000. Hamilton, Ontario is actually named after one of the original settlers not the Scottish town and is now approx. 500,000 people
