Although HCL is the chemical formula for hydrochloric acid, in a medical setting HCL usually stands for hydrochloride. It is a salt resulting from the reaction of hydrochloric acid and usually an amine or other organic base and is frequently added to medication for stability and ease of administration. HCL will often appear added to the end of the medication name.
