The ruler tool on Google Earth seems to be telling me that there are points in Greenland and points in Luxembourg that are less than 1660 miles apart. This means that Luxembourg should push Belarus out of the rankings.

Why are Faroe Islands included? No one considers that a sovereign state.

Oct 11, 2014
On the contrary, many do! The Faroe Islands have a similar relationship of free association to Denmark to that which Marshall Islands, Palau and Federated States of Micronesia (which I think we all agree are countries) have with the United States. See here for more information.

No way. The Faroe Islands are not a sovereign state just because they are an autonomous county.

And Denmark too! Why are they including Denmark? Denmark will be 0 Km. an 0. Mi. and even 0. Cm., because Greenland is a region of Denmark

It's not a region! It's a country. To be exact, it's a constituent country, alongside the countries of Denmark and Faroe Islands, in the Kingdom of Denmark. (Yes, there's a Kingdom of Denmark, and a Country of Denmark, and they are different entities)

Politically it may be part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but geographically it is far more than "0" miles/kms away.

If you include the Faroe Islands, why not add Svalbard and Jan Mayen?

Feb 20, 2015
It's interesting working ourselves down the list of "degree" of "countriness" of places and working out what makes the cut and what doesn't. Faroe Islands are clearly national, with their own flag, parliament, and a foreign policy independence equivalent to Marshall Islands and a defence policy as independent as Samoa's, and most importantly a national identity. None of this can be said for Svalbard or Jan Mayen. If you include Countries 205 to 242 then Svalbard does make it, but even with that expanded list Jan Mayen (indigenous population zero, research population 18 to 35 depending on season) doesn't make it. Maybe we should bracket that with Ă…land on a Countries 243-and-below quiz. Any other candidates for 243+?

Where did you see the Faroe Islands have foreign affairs independence?

Check the degree of foreign affairs independence of Marshall Islands, and you'll find it is identical to that of Faroe Islands'.

Probably because the Faroe islands aren't officially a country and Portugal would, on first glance, seem further away than Spain.

Russia's already here, with a much shorter distance than to the Baltic countries, because its nearest point to Greenland is much further north, near its border with Norway and Finland.
