Ranking Brazilian Capitals from Best to Worst

+10

27 capitals. 26 are state capitals, and one, the national capital. Infrastructure, beauty, culture... all of the Brazilian capitals have a good point, or a bad one. You may know what will be the first, because, duh! But and the others? Is hard to say precisely, but, let’s go, and rank the Brazilian capitals, from the best, to the worst.

1- Belo Horizonte/MG 🥇

Nothing new. BH receive the first place easily, due to infrastructure, postcards, and a good combination of the calm countryside (uh... maybe?), and the hustle-and-bustle of a metropolis. The old and the new are holding hands on this city. Plazas, parks, skyscrapers, and the big Pampulha Lake. Without mention the places around Belo Horizonte. Historical cities, many mountains, rivers running everywhere... a shield for a so amazing city. I did Minas Gerais blogs not for pass time, or don’t have a creative block (ok, I did for pass away the creative block). Here lives the one of the amazing and imposing emperors that signed the Quadruple Alliance! Open your eyes, and we’ll show you a Belo Horizonte (Beautiful Horizon). Lovely.

Praça do Papa (Pope’s Square), and Serra do Curral at background
Pampulha Lake with Igrejinha da Pampulha (Pampulha Church) at right, and Mineirão at left
Museu de Artes e Ofícios (Arts and Crafts Museum), at Praça da Estação (Station Square)

2- Curitiba/PR 🥈

Receiving the second place, the coldest capital of Brazil (although I love snow, I don’t like too much cold) preserves a lot of the green and the parks, such as Barigui, Tanguá and the Botanical Garden, without overshadow the modernity of skyscrapers, and the first rotating building of the world. Education and health of quality, Curitiba have an amazing infrastructure. The tourism grow in Curitiba, not just because of the Iguaçu Falls, at west of Paraná, but due to the life quality.

3- Salvador/BA 🥉

I consider myself as 99% mineiro (from Minas Gerais), and 1% baiano (from Bahia). Minas and Bahia are brother states, and walk holding hands, in the map, and if not by Curitiba, also in the podium. Salvador, capital of Bahia is a timeline of history, and a future of modernity. The past wasn’t easy due to slavery. Pelourinho was the place where the slaves were shown and punished. Now, is a stronghold of history and prettiness. Amazing beaches, high skyscrapers... Salvador is a cool city.

Farol da Barra (Barra Lighthouse) at the extreme south of Salvador
Igreja de Nosso Senhor do Bonfim (Church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim) and the famous Fitas do Bonfim (Bonfim Tapes)

4- Porto Alegre/RS

Porto Alegre have nice postcards and also a good life quality. On the margins of the huge Guaíba Lake, the city is a "entrance" for the famous Serra Gaúcha, including the "European" stars Gramado and Canela, and the canyons of Aparados da Serra. They impressioned the Europeans, who come to these regions for live. But isn't in the podium.

5- Recife/PE

The Brazilian Venice, Recife is a cool city regarding postcards. Full of them. Also, a nice one-stop city to the gates of Porto de Galinhas, and the history of Olinda (to sum up: the Ouro Preto of Pernambuco). And house of @jpedrocm (maybe. I know he lives in Pernambuco)

Antônio Vaz Island, between the channels of the mouth of Capibaribe River
Boa Viagem Beach
Aurora Street view from Beberibe River. At Aurora, all the buildings are turned to the east.
Ground Zero of Recife, in Rio Branco Plaza

6- Florianópolis/SC

One of the three capital-islands, Floripa is the best-ranked capital in HDI. An entrance to the Oktoberfest in Blumenau, the Itajaí Valley, big skyscrapers and beaches of Balneário Camboriú, and the Beto Carrero World on Penha.

Praia do Santinho (Santinho/Little Saint Beach) at north of the city

7- Brasília/DF

I like Brasília because the innovation of its architecture, projected for look like an airplane. In the 60s, Brazil saw its new capital. Sadly, is where live many stupid politicians of the corrupt Brazil.

Monumental Axis. At center, the TV Tower. At background, the National Congress, the Esplanade of Ministries, and Paranoá Lake.

8- Rio de Janeiro/RJ

Rio, the city of Brazilian tourism. A really beautiful city, well, the marvelous city. Many places for visit and things for do. Sadly, the slums that splash the mountains, show the violence, pain, and poverty of Rio de Janeiro. Although that, don’t believe on what Simpsons say about it (Blame it on Lisa) -_-

Sugarloaf and Botafogo Cove
Aerial view of Jornalista Mário Filho Stadium: the Maracanã. At left, the gymnasium Maracanãzinho

9- São Paulo/SP

The biggest city of Brazil. A huge megalopolis, figuring in one of the biggest cities of the world, is full of buildings... and social contrasts. The Cracolândia (Crackland) is where you should never think on stepping. São Paulo is such a crowd in traffic and it doesn’t have so much space for tranquility, this if you exclude Ibirapuera Park, and the boroughs at south. @thailand (or even @gustavo11 if seeing it, but I think he won’t be offended) will surely find this a provocation lo

10- Vitória/ES

Capital of Espírito Santo, Vitória is a entrance to some cool beaches at Marataízes, Guarapari, Itaúnas Dunes, Vila Velha, and Vitória itself. Good life quality, but not the best city.

Third Bridge, connecting Vitória to Vila Velha

Praça dos Namorados (Valentine’s Plaza)

11- Manaus/AM

Most wild capital of the world, Manaus proof that metropolis and forest can be an amazing combination, with the meeting of waters between Rio Negro and Solimões, along the industrial complex of the Free Economic Zone (Zona Franca). Not a good HDI index though, and the climate is not good for me (equatorial). Would I adapt well?

12- Fortaleza/CE

Really nice beaches, but, aren't just the beaches that make a city. That's why Fortaleza is here. But is the entrance to Beach Park, a water park at Aquiraz, and to the Jericoacoara National Park.

Aerial view of Fortaleza in the Meirelles Beach
Statue of Iracema Guardiã
Governador Plácido Castelo Stadium: the Arena Castelão, that received games from 2014 World Cup

13- Goiânia/GO

Entrance to the hydrothermal resort of Caldas Novas, in the heart of the Cerrado, or the historical city of Goiás Velho, and even the Chapada dos Veadeiros, Goiânia is a modern and planned city, built in the 30s. Sad place that happened the Cesium-137 Radiological Accident. Ranking is getting hard always when we keep going.

85 Avenue, and the João Alves de Queiroz Viaduct

14- Maceió/AL

Capital of Alagoas, the Brazilian Caribbean, is a cool city due to its beaches and reefs. Entrance to paradise beaches of São Miguel dos Prazeres, and Maragogi. The problem, is being the worst city in HDI. Outstanding beaches aren’t the things that definite good cities, so I’m sorry, Ponta Verde.

15- Natal/RN

Natal is a cool city (where I almost moved to), and is entrance to paradise beaches at the north coast of Rio Grande do Norte. But there are some cooler cities actually lol

Forte dos Reis Magos (Fortress of the Three Wise Men), view from Newton Navarro Bridge

16- Aracaju/SE

Aracaju is the entrance to the mouth of one of the most important rivers of the world: São Francisco River. The city is good because of the beaches. Nothing that much, but win points as being the Capital of Life Quality (not the best HDI though!)

Curve of Beira-Mar Avenue, and buildings of Aracaju
Museu da Gente Sergipana (Sergipe People Museum)
Construtor João Alves Bridge, that connect Aracaju to Barra dos Coqueiros
Arcos da Orla de Atalaia (Atalaia Edge Arches)

17- João Pessoa/PB

It’s a good city, considered once as the second city with the most trees (I still think BH has more, I’m not gonna lie). But, you basically have of postcards, the Tambaú Hotel (that magically I didn’t find a good picture on Wikimedia Commons, so you can see this copyrighted image... -_-), and the Ponta do Seixas, marking the easternmost point of Americas. And there are “cooler” cities. Well, you can visit @IAB if you go way west, to Cajazeiras...

18- Campo Grande/MS

Capital of Mato Grosso do Sul, an entrance to the amazing nature of Pantanal. The cooler cities point is brutal. Nice life quality though, and a lot of green areas index

Aerial view of the Indigenous Nations Park
Panorama of Campo Grande
University Stadium Pedro Pedrossian: the Morenão. In 1982, on a game against Operário-MS, and Vasco da Gama, there happened the biggest public UFO sighting of the world.

19- Cuiabá/MT

Cuiabá is next to three different biomes: Amazon, Cerrado, and Pantanal. Entrance to the Chapada dos Guimarães National Park, and is the exact center of South America. So this means, TOO HOT. 40° C on summer easily (despite I prefer hot than cold weather, and still preferring snow than rain). The winds from the ocean reach that point. And again, cooler cities.

Center of Cuiabá. At center, Arena Pantanal.
South America Geodesic Center
Sérgio Motta Bridge, on Cuiabá River. It connects Cuiabá, to Várzea Grande
SESC Arsenal Cultural Center, a historical building of the historical center of Cuiabá

20- Belém/PA

Belém do (of) Pará is the biggest metro area of the North of Brazil. You can buy many products, wild fruits, etc on the Ver-o-Peso Market (See-the-Weight), at the margins of Guajará Bay. Entrance to the Serra dos Carajás (Serra Pelada) mining (hopefully don’t become the phosphate of Nauru history we already know), old railroads of Belém-Bragança Tourist Route, and the Amazon Paraense with Santarém and the best river beach of the world: Alter do Chão. Rain almost every time, and I hate rain. Has a good life quality... on the north of the country. The city occupies the 22th place of the list, with the north full of problems related to sanitation.

Docks Station after the revitalization. Previously, the place was part of the city’s port.
Teatro da Paz (Theater of Peace) and skyline of Belém at background
Emílio Goeldi Paraense (Pará’s) Museum, a research institution

21- Palmas/TO

The youngest, last populated, and one of the planned capitals of the country, Palmas looks increasing on HDI. But for me it’s the entrance to the wonders of Jalapão, and nothing that more. Some of the cities I don’t think I would adapt well (or maybe I’m basically a chew gum stuck in BH, only traveling sometimes lol)

Aerial view of Palmas
Memorial Coluna Prestes, on the Praça dos Girassóis (Sunflowers Square), one of the biggest squares of the world
Fernando Henrique Cardoso Bridge (disagreeing with the name...) on the Palmas Lake
Araguaia Palace, seat of the Tocantins Government, on the Praça dos Girassóis. It was named after the river that cross the city

22- São Luís/MA

It’s like two cities in one. You have a Historical part, and a Modern part, that the historical part is a UNESCO’s World Heritage. The city was built by French, and is entrance to the Garden of Eden, in subject of Brazilian Nature: Lençóis Maranhenses. Located in a island, is the Brazilian Capital of Reggae. São Luís just don’t get a higher position, in subject of infrastructure. The state of Maranhão is probably the worst (life quality), and is the poorest state of Brazil. And in recent searches, São Luís appear between the last cities to live in Brazil

Aerial view of São Luís Historical Center
Monument to the Fishermen, on São Marcos Beach
Tiled facades of the Museum of Visual Arts in the Historic Center of São Luís
Ponta do Farol Neighborhood, at night

23- Teresina/PI

The Brazilian Mesopotamia, between the rivers Parnaíba and Poty, is the entrance to the Serra da Capivara National Park where you can find the biggest concentration of pre-historical sites of the Americas, and the Parnaíba River Delta with its outstanding dunes and islands. The city doesn’t have beaches, and despite this isn’t a problem (as Belo Horizonte also doesn’t have beaches...), cooler cities...

Sign "THE AMO (THE — Teresina — LOVE)" at Potycabana Park
Teresina Train Station
Palácio Karnak (Karnak Palace), headquarters of Piauí Government

24- Boa Vista/RR

Only the planning of the city gets brief points. Completely above the Equator, and entrance to the beautiful Mount Roraima, but... I mean...

Centro Cívico (Civic Center), where diverge the most of the avenues of the city. Here’s where is located the Monument to the Prospectors
Ene Garcez Avenue, with Praça das Águas (Waters’ Square) at background
Christ Redeemer Metropolitan Cathedral
Macuxis Bridge on Rio Branco (White River), connecting Boa Vista to Cantá, Normandia, and Bonfim

25- Macapá/AP

Woosh... Top 3 worst... ranking these were so hard. The fact Macapá is crossed by the Equator, the stadium Zerão exactly crossed by the line, and is located next to the mouth of Amazon River, are the only “wow” stuff here. And the life quality is really bad

Ground Zero of the Equator. At background, Milton de Souza Corrêa State Stadium: the Zerão, where the parallel crosses exactly the halfway line

26- Porto Velho/RO

Porto Velho. Yes, Porto Velho 😐 Uh... biggest capital in area? Only that makes border with another country? Only winning points as has a HDI better than our last one... Oh, again, couldn’t find good images for a big point of the city: Rio Madeira Palace, where is located the new seat of the government of Rondônia. I mean, I need to put an image of it still in construction... -_- But here you go a copyrighted image

27- Rio Branco/AC

Sadly, the meme of the dinosaur also fit with our ranking. The westernmost capital of the nation doesn’t look to be in a progress. I hope to see it getting more developed in life quality, and on tourism. I need having a last one, but the last cities are not that far of best positions at the ranking. It was hard to rank the cities, and I needed putting Rio Branco at last place. Hopefully “Menino do Acre” won’t do nothing against me lol

The bridges and footbridge that cross Acre River
Joaquim Macedo Footbridge at night
The Old Market on Gameleira Boardwalk
Parque da Maternidade (Maternity Park)

That was a hard ranking. It was hard even on choosing good (or even images) for the places. Lots of places weren’t represented like Wire Opera House (Curitiba), Administrative Center of Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre), Arena das Dunas (Natal), Monument to the Three Races (Goiânia), Monument to the Opening of the Ports (Manaus), Ponte dos Ingleses (Fortaleza), Ibirapuera Park (São Paulo), Barra da Tijuca (Rio de Janeiro)... but 5 images would be too much. Well, the ranking was hard for me, with the last places and the middle getting really variable. And as I didn’t visit a lot of them, I’m no idea of what I’m talking about the cities. But I think that’s fine. I needed to post for Blog Games, so... it’s an inoffensive and bad-done ranking lol. I think we're done here :)

When someone mentions Brazil most people will only think of Rio de Janiero, the Amazon rain forest or possibly the cathedral of Brasilia. In this blog you have shown how beautiful the country's other cities are. Even your bottom choice looks like a really nice place.

Well done MG, an excellent blog.

I mean like searching the images of the places at the bottom of the blog, that I couldn’t add (as well the two links of images in João Pessoa and Porto Velho), but having a new tourist would be amazing :)
