maybe not that many have played the game before...i have never played...got irkutsk and yakutsk, though...mainly because i saw them mentioned somewhere recently that they were on in the game..which makes you wonder why is siberia part of the game as well as those 2, seeing both of them are in siberia anyway

Craziest game of Risk I ever played....won by wiping out 5 other players in a single turn. Targeted 1 player, got their Risk cards, had to turn in again, and saw I could take another player out. Got THEIR Risk cards....etc., etc.

it ends like that a lot if you play with the original rules where those turn-ins get bigger and bigger as you go.

When I used to play Risk a lot in high school, I had the opposite problem. Lots of players wanted to be cautious and build up their forces to avoid being steamrolled, so no one ever did much attacking. The worst is when two players would strike a deal to leave one country undefended and just keep trading it back and forth to build up cards. Eventually I would get so bored that I would attack someone just to get the game moving, and then of course I would end up the first one out. But since we were often on our second day of play by that time, I was all too happy to get out of the game.

The Risk board's level of inconsistency with what the world actually looks like is very painful

Keeping in mind that the game is 60+ years old, and was designed with an 18th or 19th century aesthetic (the infantry units have fancy uniforms like were in fashion in warfare at that time, plus the horsemen and artillery cannons), the map makes a lot more sense viewed through that lens. But it definitely looks off in comparison to the modern day world map.

As someone who has never even seen a Risk board, I was really surprised by how well I did. I knew the names of the three eastern Russian areas, but the rest was guesswork. I missed Northern Europe and North Africa because I viewed them as central and western respectively. I'm also pretty sure I typed Alberta, but I must've made a typo. Nevertheless, 37/42 is about double the expected amount of hits. Could someone please explain to me why that big one in eastern Europe is called Ukraine instead of Russia?

Risk is decent, but the idea has been improved upon since the game came out. Many of the other versions of Risk (2210 A.D., Godstorm, or any of the licensed ones like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings) improve upon the basic game and fix many of its flaws. Plus there are other "world conquest" board games that approach the idea differently and are also pretty good.

The game seems to be set a couple centuries ago, when war consisted of infantry in fancy uniforms, horse-mounted cavalry, and cannons on wheels. At that time, Ireland was ruled by Britain, was it not?
