Huh, I thought both Ireland and India were out of the commonwealth. I remember the breakup being pretty rough.

Ireland got independant around 1920, before the idea of the Commonwealth was a thing, while India got it in 1947. Also, India got its independance on good terms with the UK, it's the partition between India and Pakistan that was a complete mess.

i’m confused by the rainfall question - does it mean per square kilometre? otherwise i thought brazil must get more just by its sheer size advantage. maybe that could be worded clearer

Yes it is averaged over the area of the country. I updated the question, sorry

i got the commonwealth wrong, even though ireland is right next to britain, i got the olympic one wrong, i feel dumb for that, i got the ikea one wrong, but sweden is known for ikea, and the rainfall one, i thought brazil was HUGE but the panama canal might be the reason i got it wrong

Germany is an order of magnitude more populated, with a population spread on its entire territory (while the Swedes mostly live near the coast of the southern half of the country). Making it a wider market for Ikea.

Some guesses I had to take :

Panama and Bhutan : it's much easier to score high in an average if you're a small country, than averaging a huge landmass

Iceland vs Netherlands : both are wealthy and stable, however Iceland is known for having nationalised its banks after the 2008 financial crisis. Such a move may have impacted their credit rating, although it made sense at the time to put a leash on banks that took too much risks

Nigeria vs Ghana : the point zero is some distance away from the shore, while Nigeria sits right at the corner of the Gulf of Guinea

India vs Kenya : the equator passes just south of Singapore, that is further south than the tip of India
