micrometre should be accepted for the first question as it is 1 millionth of a metre. and i tried in uk and us spelling and couldn't work ou why I was wrong.

I'm pretty sure that in any metric-using nation we use micrometer(re); I know we do so in Canada as well. It's not really about where so much as how the unit is used; most scientific fields use micron.
